Upgrade to 2.5????

Upgrade to 2.5????

Post by Chips Fowle » Thu, 11 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Has anybody upgrade from Solaris 2.4 to 2.5.  We are looking at going to
2.5 and would like to know any pitfalls, problems, gotchas etc.

Also - what is the upside of 2.5.  I hear Sun says the 2.5 kernal is faster -
Any truth??

Any problems using DiskSuite 4.0 (for disk mirroring), Common Desktop 1.0.1 that
is available with the 2.5 distribution.

Please respond by e-mail.

Thanks

Solaris 2.5 kernal seems to be faster than the 2.4 kernals.  Overall
It seems to be as good if not some what better than 2.4

No expir on ODS 4.0 and mirroring

IMHO CDE right now is a giant memory leaky.  If you login and out
daily then it might not be to bad.  Stay logged in say over a couple
of night or worse a weekend and you can kiss you memory goodbye ;-)
It is a neat thing to play/expirement.

I ran the upgrade on my system, and it went off without a hitch.  Install,
reboot, and go.

It does in fact seem to be faster, yes.

ODS seems to work just fine.  CDE is fun, but I haven't beat it up enough
to know if it's a real win.

This is a wierd one, but 2.4 format falls all over itself if you have
a LUN > 16Gb.

1. Upgrade from 2.5 to 2.5.1

I tried upgrading two PCs from Solaris 2.5 to 2.5.1 this week.  One
upgrade was successful, the other wasn't.  The successful upgrade was
on an older 486 33 Mhz system.  The failed upgrade was on a Gateway
P5-133 system.  The upgrade failed while booting the CDROM.  The system
had a kernel panic and page fault messages scrolled off the screen
faster then I could read them.  This system has been running 2.5 since
March with no problems.

I reloaded 2.5 on the Gateway system just to make sure it still worked.
However, whenever I try to boot up the CDROM for 2.5.1, I get the page
fault/kernel panic.  Tried two different sets of 2.5.1 media with the
same result.

If anyone has experienced this problem, please let me know. The P5-133
Gateway system has 16 MB of RAM. Again, Solaris 2.5 runs flawlessly on
it.  2.5.1 won't load.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Dave
