how to start SMC server

Post by tortu » Wed, 11 Jul 2001 14:21:48

Hi,

Just installed Solaris 8, and when I go to Solaris Management Console 2.0,
it times out for about 2 minutes and then gives me an error message: "SERVER
NOT RUNNING. No SMC server was available on the specified server.  Please
ensure there is an SMC server available on the specified host and that it is
running."
I have specifed the hostname of my computer.

What is wrong here?????

First off, all the smc stuff is located at "/usr/sadm/lib/smc", and you would
start smc, by issuing an exec on "/usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smcboot".

It looks like there may be some kind of misconfiguration, or that you are
missing some components, after your install.

SMC is normally started from "S90wbem" at rc 2 ("/etc/rc2.d/S90wbem"), so
you might check to see if that entry was created under the install. The
"S90wbem" script will check to varify that indeed "/usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/
smcboot" is existing, and if not exit. Perhaps you are missing the whole or
parts of the smc directory?

how to start SMC server

I typed the command you said to start SMC.  I then opened up the gui console
and while the terminal was still open, the terminal said
"/usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smcwbemserver [7]: /libfunctions: not found".
The gui then said the same thing as in my first message.

How could this be?  I chose "default install".  I just put this on an
eMachine.  Could this be a hardware problem?  Am I gonna get flamed for not
posting to alt.solaris.x86?

1. SMC: no smc server available

I've a Sun Blade 150 with Solaris 8 preinstalled here.
I'm unable to use SMC since the SMC server doesn't start.
Look:

bash-2.03# /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
bash-2.03# ps -ef|grep smc
    root 19812 19811  0 13:43:40 pts/4    0:00
/usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smcboot
    root 19811     1  0 13:43:40 pts/4    0:00
/usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smcboot
bash-2.03# smc
Starting SMC server version 2.0.0.
endpoint created: :898
prop dir: /usr/sadm/lib/wbem
log dir: /var/sadm/wbem/logr
SMC server exiting: internal initialization failed: Cannot find
service com.sun.management.viper.services.Authorization

The "Starting SMC server..." message come along when the UI tries to
contact the server; it then says "No SMC server is running on the
specified server. Make sure bla bla...".

The named Java class seems to be present:

bash-2.03# unzip -l /usr/sadm/lib/smcapi.jar |grep Authorization
    787  04-26-01  17:20
com/sun/management/viper/services/Authorization.class
    624  04-26-01  17:20
com/sun/management/viper/services/AuthorizationException.class

I've only touched /etc/nodename and /etc/defaultrouter and installed
Sun Forte 7 compiler collection.

Any hints are appreciated!
Thank you,
