Solaris wont boot

Post by S » Mon, 18 Jun 2001 12:25:14

Hi,
I have a Solaris 2.6 os. When trying to install jdk131 I did the following

Installed the patches listed below.
Added a a disk as my swap disk using the command swap -a somedisk

After I completed the above two steps, I cant reboot my machine.
It just hangs at the boot time after completing the memory check
It just stops at: Boot disk ...

Can someone tell me what to do ??

FOLLOWING IS THE LIST OF PATCHES I ADDED.

Im just guessing here. But at the ok> prompt, I would type devalias and make sure that
"disk" is aliased to an actual disk, ie. disk0 or disk1 ...

Can you boot from cdrom?? I was thinking maybe a hardware problem, but since you just added
a kernel patch, the patch is most likely the problem. How about booting from cdrom and
mounting the / partition and reinstaling the installboot

Just some guesses here. Let us know what you find out. Good Luck!

Mike,
Thanks for your reply. Just wondering if I can download this CD contents
from the Sun website. I am not an SA, fortunately/unfortunately just have the
root password with me. So, let me know if I can download from Sun website.

thanks

1. Help! Solaris wont boot since patch cluster

Hello all. I need help. I posted this several days ago but got no
response here. Thought I would try again.

I installed the most recent patch cluster for Solaris 2.5.1 on a Sparc
10, rebooted the machine and oops, it wont boot!

It says:

args:
not found: pageout-reserve
not found: pageout-reserve
krthld: error during initial load/link phase
memory address not aligned

The boot device was in fact target 1 prior to the patches. It would seem
that the kernel may have been corrupted and just wont load. On the other
hand (not knowing the exact bootup procedure), pageout could refer to a
problem with the /swap partition. So I booted from the cdrom (-s) and
tried to fsck the slices. c0t1d0s1 for /swap comes back with the error
message:

BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
USE AN ALTERNATE SUPERBLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION;
eg, fsck [-F ufs]  -o b=# [special ...]
where # is the alternate superblock. SEE fsck_ufs(1M)

None of the alternate superblock numbers work (found from newfs -N
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s1).

A lot of questions come to mind like:

What happened? And how do I correct it? Is this really a swap space
problem? And if so, is the fix as simple as modifying the vfstab to
point to a different /device/dsk/? Is it better to just reinstall
Solaris?

Gotta love this "crash" course in Solaris!

Thanks in advance
