Newbie Printer Issues

Post by Frank Patru » Tue, 10 Oct 2000 04:00:00

Hello,
I am running solaris 7 on an Ultra II VME card and need to print to
a network printer.  I read the lp and lpadmin man pages but still
couldn't figure out how to set this up.  Any starter hints someone can
help me with?

TIA

Frank

admintool ; click on browse -> printers ; click on edit -> add -> Access
to Printer
Don't forget to put the printer name in the /etc/hosts file

I apologize.  You already told us it's an HP 8100.

Your best bet would be to download the HP Jetdirect software
from HP's web site and use the software to add the printer
to your machine.

  http://www.hp.com/
  Click on "Drivers"
Enter "jetdirect solaris" in the search box and click the "GO" button.
Click on "HP JD Printer Installer for Solaris".

Follow the pages to read the installation instructions and download
the software.

1. Lilo Issue and Library Issue on a Redhat 6.2 System [Newbie]

 Hi,

Well I finally got my RH 6.2 system working. Love it to, I couldn't
ever think of switching back to winblows. But here is my issues. If
anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

First when upgrading my desktop switching utility and trying to install
the switch-desk kde package for the kde feel, I get this message.

Doing a rpm -Uvh <package name.rpm>

libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is needed by switchdesk-kde-3.6-1, now I
searched my system with locate and kpackage for this file and it turns
up no where. I do a updatedb on a regular basis, and still it is a no show.
Now I am tempted to do a rpm -Uvh --nodeps to ignore the dependency
but before I resort to that and possibly screwing up my installation again
I was wondering could anyone off some light on the situation? or a resource
where I may download this file, and where is should be installed to? It would
be greatly appreciated.

My second issue is with Lilo. I have a WD 20.5gig UDMA 100 HD, my mother
board is a abit bx-133 board, the 20gig contains my Windows partition [yes
I know i just put my foot in my mouth here] I only keep it for emergencys] Lilo
will not boot from it for some reason. My dad told me that is because Lilo is on
my 8gig which has my linux partition and not that drive since its on the first
controller, and therefore it can't see it to boot from it. He says its missing
the boot files that are needed to boot from it and suggested i add a small
boot partition to it for lilo that way it will boot that first. and I can rezoom as
normal, or however you spell it. my Linux drive is Hda and Windows drive is
hde so the boot files are on hda but need to be on hde. If anyone could help
out a newbie user to linux it would be greatly appreciated. I wanna get the
drive booting so I can triple boot Win98se, RH 6.2 [I hate 7] and Mandrake
7.2 or maybe Suse, Slack or FreeBSD. To wise my experience. Also does
anyone know where I can get a copy of the Newest Solaris as a Iso image?
Instead of going out to buy it. Thanks again, Would appreciate the help.

Brad

P.S.- Happy Linux-ing to all.
