vms -> solaris time conversion

i have a boatload of binary data with vmx timestamps that i am
migrating to a solaris platform. does anyone know where i can find
algorithms or c routines to convert these the vmx times to solaris?

I am noticing that telnet converts newline characters
to carriage returns. Any ideas about why this is done?
Is there an option to send a newline as a newline?
