Problem running Netscape 4.5 on x86 Solaris 7

Post by Joe » Wed, 24 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I downloaded Netscape 4.5 from Sun's site for Intel Solaris 7.  I installed
it while logged in as root (did not su to root).  I added the netscape
directory to my PATH, and even rebooted, but when I try to launch Netscape,
I get the following error:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

I am logged in as root when I try to execute it from a terminal window.  It
should be noted, that I am logged into the console directly--no remote
login, and when I press the Web Browser from the CDE panel, nothing happens.

Anyone know what the problem is?

Try "xhost +" before launching Netscape

Best regards

yup, I had same problem. but since it works fine when I log in as non-root
(i.e. as a normal user account), did not bother with it. I dont use root
to launch x-apps any way).

If you log off root, and login back as normal user account. it will work.

You have to enable the Xserver to accept connections form your machine
"xhost +" for all hosts or
"xhost <YourHostname>"

I have too this problem, I have noted it only on a Solaris 2.6 (5/98),
and not on older 2.6 installation. May be this is a new CDE security
configuration from Sun.

Anyway the solution is simple:

type "xhost +'your host name'" in a Terminal window.

1. netscape 4.5 on solaris 7/x86 w/cde keeps hanging, locks the screen

netscape 4.5 on sol 7 x/86 locks the screen on periodic basis,
even if i telnet to the host from another machine and kill the
process, it doesn't release the screen. end up rebooting the host.
seems like 4.5 is the only choice for sol 7 x/86. anyway to get
around? anything to do with cde? Thanks,
