Hi,

On one of my solaris 8 server ( E 3000 ) shutdown or init commands stopped
responding. Only reboot command works.

Any idea why.

Probably one of your K* init scripts hanged.  Have you recently changed
anything in /etc/init.d and/or /etc/rc?.d directories?

One of the shutdown scripts is*.
who -a will list an rc script which has not terminated (no "term=" field).
ps -ef give you the pid and ptree on that pid will show what's*.

I had the same issue.. I purchased an RS/6000 running AIX 4.3.3 and the
problem went away!

Very expensive solution for a very simple problem.  Maybe I should call
your boss and tell him that if he offers me your job, I can save him six
digits $$$$$$$$$$ (at least) per month.
