I have successfully installed Solaris on an extended partition next to
a primary one with win95.

Booting Solaris (x86) from an extended partition

From my experience you have to have Win95 on your primary partition with
enough free space minimum 300 meg for stand-alone installation. When you go
to install Solaris you create a UNIX partition and the boot mgr takes over
the boot record. Make sure you have the  UNIX partition as the active
partition.
IE: fdisk - select active partition - "select the partition that is UNKNOWN"

You should be good to go..

Good luck
