2.4 bug in man ?

I think there is a bug in man program in Solaris 2.4....

I have man page for news-recovery, I tried to add it into windex
(using catman -w) and I cannot find it then...

You are not seeing an error, more a flaw in design.  Man in solaris
only searches the windex files.  When building the windex file, catman
sometimes gets the incorrect name for a man entry.  To get around the
flaw, do a man -F news-recovery, which will look for a file called
news-recovery.1, which does exist (I hope).  We have numerous man pages
with this similar problem, such as windex inserting capital letters
and then the man failing, so we aliases man to man -F.  Yes, I know
its slower, but its usually only admins doing man anyway, and we've
learned to be patient!!

That's the reason why I use windex, I want it faster...my machine is pretty
slow...

1. Solaris 2.4 x86: man(1) does not use `man.cf'

I have a system running Solaris-2.4-x86 which exhibits the
following strange behaviour: the man(1) command does not
care about the `man.cf' file in /usr/share/man and thus
shows e.g. df(1b) before df(1m).

I also have a Solaris-2.4-SPARC system where man(1) works
as expected -- with an identical `man.cf'.

Example on x86:

    /usr/share/man: search the sections lexicographically

    mandir path = /usr/share/man
      search in = /usr/share/man/windex file
        search an entry to match df.1
          search an entry to match df.1b
          unformatted = /usr/share/man/man1b/df.1b
          formatted = /usr/share/man/cat1b/df.1b
    ...

The same on SPARC:

    /usr/share/man: from man.cf, MANSECTS=1,1m,1c,1f,1s,1b,2,3,3c,3s, ...

    mandir path = /usr/share/man
      search in = /usr/share/man/windex file
        search an entry to match df.1
          search an entry to match df.1m
          unformatted = /usr/share/man/man1m/df.1m
          formatted = /usr/share/man/cat1m/df.1m
    ...

Again, `/usr/share/man/man.cf' exists in both cases with the same owner,
permissions, and contents.

Anybody knows why?
