We are moving fro SunOS to Solaris 2.3, and we want to install
OSF Motif 2.0. Motif does not include a Makefile for Solaris.
Has anyone done this? Any advise on getting Motif running
under Solaris will be greatly appreciated.
Yes, I have done it. Yuck, thrice yuck! My problems fell into
1) Ones caused by the perversity of our local system, which you
may be able to avoid :-)
2) Ones caused by bugs/imbecilities in Solaris 2.3 and Sun's
software generally (especially the compiler).
3) Ones caused by bugs/imbecilities in X11R5 (including imake);
these are by far the most troublesome.
4) Ones caused by bugs/imbecilities in Motif. Incidentally,
you DON'T want to install 2.0 - start at 2.3.
You need to start by building X11R5. While you CAN use an existing
X11R5 release, I really do not advise it, because of design errors
in the X Toolkit. In order to do this properly, you have to make
some non-trivial changes to the X11R5 configuration files (which
did not support Solaris 2 when I did this, and may not yet). Quite
a lot of source changes are also necessary, mostly in areas that
Motif does not need.
Having done that, you can start on Motif .... I run the build via
200 lines of perverse scripts to cover up the worst of the problems
that I mention. Extensive changes to the configuration files are
also needed, but only trivial source changes. In this context at
least, Motif 1.2.3 source is much cleaner than X11R5. But you
really don't want to know what has to be done to get the documentation
If you still want to proceed, I can send you my scripts and some
diffs of the changed files. I shall NOT send the changed files, for
copyright reasons, nor shall I be posting diffs.

There are bugs to be sure. But they have not stopped us from shipping
a very fine product.
No special node licensing to unlock the CD or use the software either.

Has anyone sucessfully built Motif 2.0 on Solaris 2.3 with the
GNU gcc2.6.0 compiler? I'm looking to purchase OSF's motif 2.0, but
I'd like some reassurance that someone is running it with the
above configuration. Hardware is a Sparcserver 1000, and some
670 MP's. Please reply via personal email, I'll summarize.
