Ultra 5 IDE hard disks - can I use any PC hard disk?

Post by Hank Kingsle » Thu, 29 Nov 2001 20:38:45

I need to buy a bigger hard disk for my Ultra 5.  It has a 9.1GB disk at
present and I want to ADD aonther disk.  I've seen some disks out of a newer
U5 and they're 20GB Seagate Barracuda ATAII's.  I believe this is a regular
disk used in many x86 PC's.  Can I buy any popular x86 hard disk and use
that?  Is there a size limit?  I'm looking at buying a 40GB disk for my
Ultra 5.  Are there PROM limitations like the PC has (i.e. 8GB disk size
limit).

Yes you can.

I've used IBM 30GB and 70GB disks.

For large disks you may need to update the eeprom and Solaris 8.
The eeprom is ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches/106121*

Check groups.google.com for details.

Hard drives and CD/CDRW/DVD drives should work fine.

For Solaris 8 you'll need 108974-17 installed to actually be able to burn
with a CDR drive, some sort of
DMA foolishness in previous versions of the driver. You'll also have to
turn off the volume manager
for both cdrecord and sun's cdrw commands; although cdrw has the proper
calls to the volume manager
fixating the drive bombs if volume management is running.

1. Solaris IDE hard disk used on NT PC systemH

Hi, All,
  I met a strange problem.
I order and install a Matror 15G IDE hard disk and install solaris 2.6 on
a Ultra 10 workstation.
It only recognizes 9G, but the software run no problem.
But I think it is too waste, then I want to change it with a 4G hard disk.
The 4G hard disk
is a second disk on a Dell GX1 desktop, I do GHOST to image the date from 4G
HDD to
the new 15G HDD, I install the big HDD in the desktop, then I met special
problem.
When the system(NT4.0) is up, on the disk manager, it can't find the second
disk.
What's the problem, does it mean the Sun /Solaris do some format on the
disk, and can't
be restore?

Regards/Bill
