Solstice PPP 3.0.1 Problem

Solstice PPP 3.0.1 Problem

Post by Yoshihiro Kikuch » Tue, 11 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hello there!

Before, I was using asppp on Solaris8 and it worked well.
(I'm also using Linux to connect my ISP)
I installed Solstice PPP and I tried to connect my ISP but I couldn't.

I collected information by using ppptrace and I realized that NCP Packet
Internet Protocol Config Request was rejected.
(Trace messages follow this main message.)
I didn't change IP address or something like this.

Does Anybody know about this problem?
Does Anybody succeed to use Solstice PPP?
Should I reinstall Solaris8?

Thanks in advance.

Your Solstice PPP is sending an NCP request with two parameters:
VJ compression and an IP address of the loopback interface (127.0.0.1).
Your ISP is rejecting that request.

It's either rejecting the request for VJ compression, which is not likely
at all, or it's rejecting your IP address.  127.0.0.1 is not a valid IP
address to use on a network interface like Ethernet or PPP.

Make sure your ppp.conf file has the line:

          request_ip_addr         on

in the dialup_path section for your ISP.  If you didn't edit that file
directly, then run the pppinit script again, and this time when it asks
for your IP address, choose the default value of "none".

This will make your Solstice PPP ask your ISP for its IP address.

The logs you posted show the peer rejecting VJ compression (this is
perfectly normal), but Solstice PPP refusing to take "no" for an
answer (this is clearly a bug).

Try changing the path to include "ipcp_compression off".

I wouldn't think so.  Unless I'm greatly mistaken, Solstice PPP 3.0.1
isn't supported on Solaris 8.  You might want to contact technical
support, though.

If you do, mention patch IDs 103563-04 and 103722-04 and bug ID
1256575.  This would appear to be a duplicate of that.

James,

I have Solstice PPP 3.0.1 as installed from the Solaris 8 Admin
Pack CD running on Solaris 8 x86.  Seems to work as well as
it did on Solaris 7 x86.  One bit of confusion - the Sun
patchdiag (v 1.0.4) complains about 3 patches for Solstice PPP
not being included.  With Solaris 7, two of them seemed to be
installed automatically when the packages were added.  None
were added with the Solaris 8 install.  One wonders if they
were integrated with the new version of PPP ...

Admin Pack came with the following on a card with the 2 CDs:

"The Solaris 8 Admin Pack provides updates to selected products
in Solaris Easy Access Server (SEAS) 3.0.  These updates make
the selected products compatible with the Solaris 8 operating
environment.  The product versions in SEAS 3.0 are compatible with
the Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 7 Operating Environments."

Does anyone know if the appropriate patches were integrated into
the Solaris 8 Admin Pack version of PPP?

Thanks,

Stuart

Thanks everybody for your advice!

I added "request_ip_addr on" and NCP request changed(from 127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0).
But I couldn't connect my ISP because that request was rejected.

I also tried to add "ipcp_compression off" but it didn't work.

Before I connected my ISP by asppp.(asppp.cf follows as last message)
I uninstalled Solstice ppp but I couldn't connect by asppp.

Should I reinstall Solaris8?

P.S. How can we get Solaris paches for FREE SOLARIS PROGRAM?
I tried to find out the paches on Sun web pages but I was refused because
that patch is for Contact Customer.

Thanks and regards,

Solstice PPP 3.0.1 Problem

Post by Martha Starke » Thu, 13 Jul 2000 04:00:00

One thing that hasn't come up in this discussion:  Some ISP's want to go
directly into the PAP or CHAP authentication without the chat script.
You can try keeping the pap authentication info in your pppconf file,
but commenting out the entire .scr file in the
/etc/opt/SUNWconn/ppp/script directory.  Don't remove the script, just
blank it out.

Solstice PPP 3.0.1 Problem

>P.S. How can we get Solaris paches for FREE SOLARIS PROGRAM?
>       I tried to find out the paches on Sun web pages but I was refused because
>       that patch is for Contact Customer.

Here's what http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/generalinfo.html
says about support and getting patches:

Support

The Solaris[tm] Operating Environment is an extremely powerful platform,
and most customers derive substantial benefit from being able to rely on
experienced support professionals. A variety of support options are
available at affordable prices. Check either

     http://www.sun.com/solaris/support.html
or
     http://www.sun.com/service/support/sw_only/solaris.html

for pricing and availability of support options, or send an email to:

Additionally, a technology support marketplace for Solaris Operating
Environment can be found at:

    http://www.hotdispatch.com/sun

Subscriptions

A subscription entitles the buyer to receive all patches, updates, and
upgrades throughout a two-year period, however, it does not include
telephone support. For more information about Subscription options,
please visit:

Solstice PPP 3.0.1 Problem

Post by Greg Andre » Fri, 14 Jul 2000 04:00:00

>I also tried to add "ipcp_compression off" but it didn't work.

Try "lpc_compression off" as well.  The ipcp_compression is supposed
to disable the Van Jacobsen compression that your ISP is rejecting,
so it's not clear why Solstice was still requesting it.
But let's try it with both kinds of compression turned off.

Quote:

>Before I connected my ISP by asppp.(asppp.cf follows as last message)
>I uninstalled Solstice ppp but I couldn't connect by asppp.

>Should I reinstall Solaris8?

I don't think you need to reinstall the whole operating system.
If you want to re-install anything, I would suggest deleting all
PPP packages and then install just the Solstice ones:

List all the PPP packages:  pkginfo | grep -i ppp

For each package run the 'pkgrm' command with the package name
as the argument.  E.g.:  pkgrm SUNWpppk

Install the Solstice PPP packages, in this order:

    SUNWpppk
    SUNWpppkx
    SUNWpppr
    SUNWpppu
    SUNWppps
    SUNWpppm

  Run pppinit and try again.
