1280x1024 with 4mb SX vsimm ?

Post by Ronald Florenc » Thu, 17 Jun 1999 04:00:00

We have a Sparc-20 with a 4mb SX vsimm, configured with 8mb of system
memory reserved for the the SX frame-buffer.  Will this configuration
support 1280x1024 resolution on a 20-inch (Sun 365-1324) display with
Solaris-2.6?

If this configuration will work, how do I switch the resolution to
1280x1024 from the default 1152x900?  Thanks,

I believe you would use the /usr/platform/sun4m/sbin/sxconfig command to
allocate your memory for the SX graphics card, and use
/usr/platform/sun4m/sbin/cg14config to change the resolution of the card
on your Sparc20.

1280x1024 with 4mb SX vsimm ?

Hi Ronald,

Check the Sun Frame Buffer FAQ (I don't remember the URL off hand) it gives
you instructions to do exactly what you want to do.  I did it for all of our
Sparc 20s.  It is done at the "OK" prompt and is something like : setenv
output-device screen 1280x1024x76m

Check the FAQ before doing this though!

1. Is the SX vsimm supported in Solaris?

Hello,
I was wondering,
if I had a SPARC10 or 20 with an SX Vsimm option (24bit framebuffer)
would it be supported by Solaris 2.5.x and beyond?
I think it is also known as a CG14...

Also, on the discussion of framebuffers,
while I love Sun hardware very much, why is it all the framebuffers
are 8bit (with colour map flashing) and to get a decent visual
one has to spend heaps of cash?

On a PC, you can have a 16bit or 24bit display for around $150.
To get an equivalent display on a Sun, you would have to spend
a couple of thousand :(

I don't have any gripes about Sun, except for this!
