how can I tell if NFS is v2 or v3?

How can I tell if a nfs mount on a Solaris 2.5
box is using v2 or v3 of NFS?  Also, how can I check
what transport method nfs is using (if it is v3)
without knowing anything about the file server.

The best way is likely to use nfsstat -m, since it's clear:

peyto[62]% nfsstat -m
...
/var/mail from caribe:/var/mail
 Flags:   vers=2,proto=udp,auth=unix,hard,intr,dynamic,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,retrans=5
...

(I know, I know - we're trying to get the mail server updated :-)

A handy, quick way is to look for free inodes; V2 can't report it:

peyto[63]% /usr/bin/df /rmt /net/moraine/export/home
/rmt               (moraine:/export/home):   44550 blocks       -1 files
/net/moraine/export/home(moraine:/export/home):   44544 blocks    13430 files

nfsstat -m

1. Problem: performance NFS V3 vs NFS V2

I have a performance problem using NFS mount.
I export a file system from a machine using NFS V3 (AIX 4.2.1)
I mount this filesystem on a machine with NFS V2 (AIX 4.1.4)
The  transfer rate is worse than NFS V2 mounted on NFS V2
On the other hand if I mount the same exporeted filesystem on another
NFS V3 sysstem and that i use the "nfs3" filesystem type the transfer
rate is excellent.

Does anybody knows the solution to speed up my NFS mount when the client
runs NFS V2 (AIX 4.1.4) and the server runs NFS V3 (AIX 4.2.1).
I do not want to update my AIX 4.1.4 system.

        Thanks
