how to configure serial port for serial printer?

Post by Jason Burnet » Wed, 10 Jul 1996 04:00:00

hi

i have a serial postscript printer connected to serial port a
of my sparc clone.  I just need to know what all the serial
port settings need to be in order to print to it.  in admintool,
there are such settings as terminal type, login prompt, service,
and streams modules, as well as others which are either enabled
or disabled.  could some kind soul either tell me what they need
to be, or point me to a howto or faq?  i can't seem to find any
documents that address the process of serial printing in solaris.
thanks.

You should disable port services completely in this menu, you cannot use
this for setting up characteristics for the serial printer. The print
system does it's own settings.

You can change settings with
lpdamin -p printername -o "stty=any_stty_parameter".

You should use a 9600 baud setting. There are problems with switching
to 19200.

I was told some  the following time ago (but I didn't test it):

There is a fundamental problem using rates different from 9600 with
"robust xon/xoff" handshake. You must set the default rate of the
serial port equal to the new rate on the system level (!), not only
with lpadmin. Thus do the following:
Edit /kernel/drv/options.conf: replace the 3rd parameter 'bd' in the
ttymodes string by 'be'.
Replace each occurrence of '9600' in /etc/lp/interfaces/<printername>
with 19200.
Reboot.

1. serial console - lilo serial= no serial port input

I'm setting up a serial console on a machine for which the monitor
will go into the repair shop.  I've successfully set up getty to
take logins from the serial port, and I've successfully configured
the kernel to send boot messages to the serial port.  The final step
is setting up lilo.  Lilo works in that the boot prompt appears on
both the system console and on the serial port. However, I cannot
enter commands to the boot prompt from the serialport.  Following
manpage procedure, I transmit a break over the serial line in an
attempt to get lilo's attention.  It doesn't work.  Lilo listens only
to the system keyboard.  What's up?

System details: lilo-0.20-2 rpm from red hat 5.2, kernel 2.2.5,
otherwise a stock rh 5.2 i386 machine. Serial port connection: I'm running
kermit on a laptop.  I send breaks from kermit  as ctrl-\ b as indicated
in kermit man page. Kermit is ckermit-192.

I suppose that the simplest explanation is that I won't be able to get
lilo's attention unless I unplug the keyboard from the
to-be-monitorless system.  Possible?

Thanks,

Dick
