installing solaris from network

Post by Brad Patterso » Sat, 26 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Forgive me if this question has been asked recently, but I have been
searching for any references and I'm coming up blank...

I need to install Solaris fresh onto a SparcStation5 I got my hands on, but
it has no cd-rom.  How do I install from a cd-rom on another SparcStation
that is on my network?

I just need someone to point me to the proper FAQ or document, and I think I
can figure out the rest.

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Look in the papers in the media kit for instructions on using
Jumpstart.  You need to set up some other computer as a Jumpstart
server (either NFS exporting the mounted CD-ROM, or NFS exporting
a filesystem with a copy of the CD-ROM, plus some other things
like rarpd, bootparamd, tftpd).

1. Install Solaris over network

Hi!

I guess this has been asked a million times, but I couldn't find a
solution to my problem in the archives!

I'm trying to install Solaris 2.7 on a SPARCstation4 over the
network. I'm using Linux to set up the bootparams and so on and a
FreeBSD machine to host the root filesystem[1]. Everything goes well
at the beginning, it fetches the inetboot from the tftpd server and
so on and it starts to load the kernel.

The problem is that is hangs on ioctl.syscon. It stats the file, and
the server (freebsd) returns OK reply with the stat info, but it just
sits there and nothing happens. I've tried to remove ioctl.syscon
file, but then it hangs with -EACCESS failure (or similiar).

Does anybody have any hints on how I can overcome this obstacle?

[1]. Because Linux' NFS implementation sucks..
