External Speaker on Sparc 20 Doesn't Work

Post by Lance G » Fri, 01 May 1998 04:00:00

I have hooked up a Sun external speacker to the 26-pin audio port on the
backup of a SparcStation 20.  The speaker has a couple of lights, but they
don't light up.  I have gotten this speaker to run on an different model
Sun, but no luck on either of my Sparc 20's.  I am running Solaris 2.5.1.
I can get audioplay to send sound to the internal speaker, but not the
external one.  Is there a secret to getting the external speaker to work?
Thanks.

???  There is no 26-pin audio port on the back of an SS20!  SS20 audio
uses 4 3.5 mm jacks: one for each of line in, line out, headphones, and
microphone.

Sounds like the speaker box, which was designed for the SS10 (and LX IIRC).
It's not supported on the SS20.

Connect the line out socket to an amplifier, and run /usr/openwin/bin/audiocontrol
to select your audio output destination.

I've got my home SS20 connected to my hifi this way, and it sounds great!  :-)

I could be wrong on this and judging from your email address I
could quite possibly be wrong, but I thought there were 2 different
varities of speakerboxes--those for the 10/LX and those for the 5/20.
I know I bought a bunch of S5 speakerboxes a while back.

If I am right about the 2 different speakerboxes, it's probably
you have the variety for the S10.

The "mini-26" connector speaker boxes are the only ones I remember Sun
shipping.  There are two mini-26 connectors on the back of an SS5/SS20;
one is AUI the other is the parallel port.  Neither makes intersting
noices.

You can add normal PC speakers to the SS5/SS20 audio ports.

1. Installed 2.4 on a Sparc 20 and ifconfig won't work anymore???

Had a Sparc20 running 2.3 that I needed to upgrade to 2.4.  Did the
upgrade, and it won't initialize the net ports.  Right from the start
(in /etc/rcS.d/S30rootusr.sh), the command:

/sbin/ifconfig -au netmask + broadcast +

gets a segmentation fault and dumps core.  If I do the same command
but put the proper numbers in, it works.  Basically, I brought
networking up by hand on the system in question.

I did an upgrade a week ago on a Sparc2 from 2.2 to 2.4 with no ill
effects, and I've been busily comparing the systems.  I can't find
anything wrong.  /etc/netmasks is correct.  Permissions are correct.

I added all the recommended patches (and our local systems
installation group recommends a superset so I installed those too.

Any ideas?  What should I be looking at/for?

Thanks,
Rob
