Well, OpenWindows is no longer supported in future Solaris instead they
will moving to GNOME from CDE. That is why I want to know if this Sol9
beta  include a beta version of GNOME.

Will the owvwm continue to work, or have they eliminated all the required
shared libraries?

Is there any chance that Sun will release the source code so that support
can be continued by the open-source community?

Isn't there an open source version of olvwm floating around somewhere
on the net? Many Linux distirbutions used to ship it. In fact the free
olvwm version is much better than the openwindows bundled olwm because
it has virtual desktops (hence, 'v' in the name..)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't olvwm a non-Sun project
already?  I know that only olwm is installed as part of
the OS.

Sun made the source to olwm and XView available long ago.
It's all somewhere on ftp.x.org, IIRC.

|Is GNOME Desktop included in this beta ?

No - GNOME is on a seperate schedule/test program at the moment.  You
can download the GNOME 1.4 Preview from www.sun.com if you want a very
early version of what is intended for future Solaris releases.

The OpenLook & Xview libraries are still there so as not to break binary
compatibility (as well as all the bits previously called "OpenWindows"
that really came from the X11 distribution). The applications/window
manager & development tools/headers are all gone.

|Is there any chance that Sun will release the source code so that support

I believe the library sources were released many years ago via the old
MIT X Consortium.

xterm is gone?  I may have to get * then.  dtterm is a very poor
substitute for xterm.

(Sorry, haven't had time to download and check myself).

Libraries are present but the binaries are gone.

We're talking about openwindows, not everything in /usr/openwin/bin;
the core MIT stuff is present and I don't see that changing.

The clients removed are programs like mailtool, olwm, /usr/openwin/bin/*tool
etc.

I have to agree, the only use for dtterm so far has been to get a shell
from where to start a few 'xterm -bg black -fg green -fn fixed &'.
If xterm is missing in sol9-ea they'll better put it in again before
releasing it Or I'll be * to... (And I got a _HUGE_ LART)

OK, I'm into my first install;  but where is the Solaris 9 Early Access
on-line
documentation that the download instructions promise?   docs.sun.com
don't
let you into Sol 9 Beta without some other password to the one that lets
you download the software...

Pete.
