motherboard rec for x86?

i may have asked this before, but i've lost the answer.

i've had trouble with memory on my two ASUS boards.  seems like
the memory has to be very, very good--not just meet specs.

i've heard this is a known problem.  is there a motherboard
brand that doesn't have this problem?  top of the line memory
isn't that much more, but i've had to swap chips several
times, and that's a hassle.  if there's a better motherboard
out there, i'd rather cut through the hassle and get something
that works first time.

i'd want to run solaris on it, i guess that's expected
in this newsgroup.

alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus would probably be the best
place to find recommendations for memory for given models.
Crucial is a bit expensive, but might be worth it for you.

Marginal memory won't cut it for the other popular Taiwanese
manufacturer, Tyan, either.

Tyan makes a dual Opteron S2885 which is getting good reviews.

1. Solaris x86 motherboard recs

Hi,

I was planning to try Solaris 7 on an x86 system.  All my
experience with Solaris is on SPARC boxes.  One question
is how well do Dual-Pentium II motherboards work under
Solaris?  Any recommendations?  My other question is
about PCI RAID controllers.  Does anyboy have success
stories with one particular model?

Also does anybody have benchmarks comparing Solaris 7
and BSDI 4.0?

Thanks for your help!

Rob
