If you are reading fom stdin or from a real tape drive you will not need
a large file aware tar implementation.
I assume, that the real problem is somewhere else and hidden by the fact thet
Sun's tar does not print useful error messages (e.g. messages that contain
errno and its derived error text).
BTW: star is not yet largefile aware. I am sorry, but cdrecord takes too
much time and I would need to find a useful autoconfiguration.
Maybe, I should have a look at the autoconf code used by GNUtar...
