tar and 2gb files

Post by Przemek B » Wed, 30 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I have following:
host:/path> tar tv
...
...
-rw-rw-r-- 1000/101   2048 Aug 13 10:05 2000 ./baza/rep1/replog.db
-rw-rw-r-- 1000/101 2048000000 Aug 13 10:12 2000 ./baza/rep1/replog.d1
-rw-rw-r-- 1000/101 2088452096 Aug 13 10:05 2000 ./baza/rep1/replog.d2
tar: tape read error
host:/path>

I found in manual, that tar is large file aware.
Does it mean, that my tape is damaged ? But
it happend on two different tapes.
Any advice ?

All your files are < 2GB!

Try star from: ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/star/aplha/

Star prints error messages ;-)

Each individual file is <2GB, but his tar image is over 2GB.  He needs
a tar that's largefile-aware.  star's one; GNU tar is another.

If I tar file using GNU tar, can I restore it later by standart tar ?

If you are reading fom stdin or from a real tape drive you will not need
a large file aware tar implementation.

I assume, that the real problem is somewhere else and hidden by the fact thet
Sun's tar does not print useful error messages (e.g. messages that contain
errno and its derived error text).

BTW: star is not yet largefile aware. I am sorry, but cdrecord takes too
much time and I would need to find a useful autoconfiguration.
Maybe, I should have a look at the autoconf code used by GNUtar...
