Third party 3D PCI cards for UltraSparc 5?

Post by Michael Champig » Sat, 09 Feb 2002 06:59:15

Hi,

I have an UltraSparc5 (the one *without* the UPA port) and I
need a supported 3D accelerated PCI card with drivers. Are
there any 3D PCI based cards with drivers for Sun Solaris?
In particular, I'd like to get a Voodoo5 going on this box.

Thanks,

Michael

Sun sells a "light" PCI version of its Exptert 3D card called Extert3D
lite. It is fairly expensive. As for a Voodoo5 card and about any
other PC card, it will likely not work at all.

The lite version Part #375-3052-02 will not work in an Ultra 5.  You can not
install a hardware graphics framebuffer in the Ultra 5 for OpenGL work.

Expert3D Lite
24-Bit Color Frame Buffer
A23 / A27 / A28 / A36
Option 3684

375-3052
3.3/5V 64Bit 66MHz
6760C FAB

Compatibility Matrix

Has this tested not working with Ultra 5 or simply not tested because
Ultra5 is too old?  SunBlade100 has 32-bit 33Mhz PCI only, so is Ultra5.  The
card itself is using 3.3/5V universal signaling and it should work fine
with Ultra5 (5V signaling).

You might see if the Xig OpenGL implementation is available for sparc,
and whether it specifically supports a voodoo5.
It aint free, if you havent figured that out already.

Sun's web page says Ultra5/10 are not supported. I don't know why this
should be. It's not a 64-bit/66MHz only card. Either there is a hidden
engineering issue, or Sun just didn't want to do the legwork for a new
card in an "old" workstation.

1. Third Party Ethernet Card for UltraSPARC 10???

I'm looking for infomation on using other ethernet cards on an UltraSPARC
10.  The price of the sun one ($700?) is a bit steep in this time of $25
10/100 PC ethernet cards.  Do other common PCI cards work or is only the
sun one supported?

Thanks,

tjb
