Harddisk-Problem: corrupt label - wrong magic number

Post by Nail Ara » Wed, 10 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

i've a problem with a Harddisk on Sparcstation10 running
Solaris 2.5.1.

I've "formatted" a new Harddisk ( IBM DORS 32160 ). You can see from the
output in /var/adm/messages that we're already running such a Disk, but
there aren't any problems like that.
During booting the system we get the message:

----> corrupt label - wrong magic number <----

It is possible to use the disk, but why does this message occur ?

Nail;
The problem seem to stem from this device using a old device label prior to
the drives creation. Using format to re-label the drive then use
"drvconfig"  and "disks" to rebuild the device drivers. This should clear
and reload the correct label and partition information for both identical
drives.

1. Corrupt Label : Wrong Magic Number

Hi,
   My problem is that I have a 9.1G seagate drive on a Ultra 10 is and
it keeps saying ...

# fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s2
** /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s2
BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
USE AN ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION;
eg. fsck [-F ufs] -o b=# [special ...]
where # is the alternate super block. SEE fsck_ufs(1M).

and I can't run the format command in the format program because it says
I must use "Manufacturer supplied Format utility" which I don't have and
don't know how to get.  But I have tried the following ...

1. I have tried to use format to create a new label and  and still
"corrupt label : wrong magic number"  error.

2. I have tried restore a backup label and still "corrupt label  : wrong
magic number"  error.

3. I have also tried "fsck -o b=32"  and and still "corrupt label :
wrong magic number"  error.
