There's nothing forcing you to install MU's. Recommended and security patches
are available from Sunsolve and all others should probably not be installed
onto production systems unless you encounter a bug.

Sun didn't explain this very well.  The download isn't 100MB, only about
26MB.  The 100MB figure is the space it takes up uncompressed.  I *wish* they
had put that on the web page.  I almost quit downloading it because of that.

Hmmm...  There is authorization on that page.  Not so long ago driver
updates for Solaris used to be publicly available...

Just register using solregis.

Well, I registered using the form linked from access1.sun.com, and
not only do I still not have access, but I've gotten annoying and
unwanted email as a result of registering.

What's the deal???

Did you unclick the "Its ok to send me annoying and unwanted email
box" on the form? I used the solregis tool and havent gotten any
emails.

Yes, that's why I'm really annoyed.  I don't have solregis
installed on any of my machines, and I'm not a big fan of
that sort of program (because of the uses M$ puts them to).

Are the MUs available on the Sunsolve site as well?  It seems
like they ought to be...

If you're a support contract customer, you can download all the
patches individually or just wait for the 5/99 CD's to come in the mail.

For some reason I imagined that the MUs could be applied to an
install image (for network installs).  In retrospect, they'd
have to be created for that specifically.  I guess I need the
CDs anyway.

Thanks for the info,

The recommended and security patches will be in the open section of
Sunsolve.

solregis can be a pain in the butt.
It requires hotjava, it's a pain to find after you've dismissed it,
and it DOESN"T WORK THROUGH PROXY.  Why the hell don't you guys
just make a link from the "access denied" page, to a HTML registration
form right there?

NO recommended patches for solaris 7.

(which is stupid, because there are at least TWO I would consider
 "critical")

(and which is doubly stupid, because sun has seen fit to have the
"MU2" free, so why not on sunsolve also?!!)

Indeed MU's can be put as part of the network installed image.
For MU1, in my OS server, e.g. /export/S7 (where you have the Solaris_2.7 dir
underneath), create dir s7_maintenance_update_1_sparc and cd into it, then
unzip MU1 in there. Network installs will automatically patch up to MU1.
I expect the same happens to MU2 (haven't tried yet.)

1. Solaris 9 with MU 2

Dear all,
I have a weird problem with Solaris 9, after installing the Solaris 9
followed by MU2 (Maintenance Update 2 from CD that coming with Solaris 9
package or downloaded from the sunsolve) the CD ROM drive is disabled
completely (other things are working fine) I did that a few times and gave
me the same thing.

I escalated this problem to Sun support and I don't have an answer yet and
it's probably a bug.

The HW is SB100.

I will appreciate if any body around may work around same thing or have a
solution for this problem.

Regards,

Frank
