Sparcstation 1 info?

Post by Mark Vaugh » Wed, 02 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I ran across a Sparcstation 1 this morning. I was visiting a local
Mom&Pop computer store down the street and they got one in a few weeks
ago. No power chord, monitor or keyboard/mouse. They no nothing about it
and don't have the equipment to power it up and check it out. It's
floppy only, and I used to CD only Sun Workstations. I'd appreciate any
insight on the following:

How useful would this be?
Could it run Solaris, or just SunOS?
Are there adapters for a PC monitor?
Are there adapters for PC or Mac keyboard/mouse?
How difficult would it be to find the OS on floppy?

It's only about $100, but if I had to go buy propriety monitors and
accessories, it wouldn't be worth it.

Thank you in advance,

To answer a few of your questions, It could run Solaris or SunOS, your
preference. Forget about the OS on a floppy. Get an external CD ROM
drive for it, and you can get Solaris7 for Sparc free on Sun's web site.
If its worth buying, I don't know, but I have a person locally, who
would sell a complete Sparc1, for between $300-$400. That includes 16"
monitor, CDROM, 1 gig HD, 32 Ram, mouse, keyboard, everything you need.

You should be able to run Solaris if it's got 32Mb of RAM - I've run Solaris
on a 1+.  It'll be veery slow though.  You can get adapters to plug a PC
monitor into it.  However, I'm not aware of any adapters that'll allow you
to use a PC keyboard / mouse.  Solaris on floppy???  Forget about it.

My advice - for that money get yourself and old PC and install Linux.

("Distribution: inet" deleted -- it's obsolete, folks!)

I found one, it cost ~ $300.  (it can do more than just that, though,
it's a device for using one keyboard with many machines.).

Install via network, if you have an extra server.  I have installed
Linux via FTP (this saves you the install server, but then you need
Internet access) on a SPARCstation 1.  Get an old serial terminal
hooked up, it's the cheapest option, and a CG3 isn't that hot anyway
:-)

Expect it to be _slow_.

Depending on the model, it may be faster with just 16 MB installed
rather than the maximum (24 MB, I think).  This is due to some
"feature" in the early MMUs.
