? 64-bit Solaris x86 on AMD Opteron

Post by aryzh » Wed, 17 Mar 2004 21:32:39

Hello All,

http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v20z/specs.html#SOFTWARE
says Solaris 9 will run on SunFire Opteron in 32-bit mode.
I thougt, 64-bit port for x86 has been complete ages ago
(at about the same time as a full 64-bit SPARC? 2.6?)

Are there any official commitments for 64-bit Solaris x86,
or speculations only are possible so far?

Thanks,
Andrei

How could that have been possible? The number of available
64-bit x86 implementations at that time was ZERO.

There has been a 64 bit port for the ITANIC.

A 64 bit port for AMD-64 is expected in the middle of the year
but most likely only for Solaris 10 and above.

Sun has been ready with the port before the first working chip
was available. They did the port using the ITANIC simulator
software.

At no earlier time in history was there a 64-bit x86 port; there
was no hardware, certainly not in the Solaris 2.6 timeframe.
Solaris 7 was the first release to run in 64 bit mode on
SPARC hardware.

Of course, a lot of the OS work needed to support a 64 bit OS
was completed with the 64 bit SPARC port: all common device drivers
and code are 64 bit clean, though there are probably wrong #ifdefs
which need to be hunted down.

Perhaps you are confused with the "Itanium" port which was completed
a long time ago but then abandoned (it was never integrated in
the main Solaris source tree)

I believe there are no firm commitments.

You're confusing it with the announcements regarding Solaris Merced.

Nothing is absolute until it delivers, but given that Sales and Marketing
drive reality...

| Sun plans to make 64-bit Solaris available on the AMD Opteron
| processor in the first half of 2004.

I expect those bits will be in Software Express for Solaris.

| Q:  When can we expect Solaris Express 64-bit for Opteron?

| A: Good question. It will be this summer. Unfortunatley I can not
| promise you a fix date yet.

But the ITANIC simulator software did not simulate a 64-bit x86
architecture, did it?

How could Sun have ported Solaris 2.6 to a 64-bit x86 architecture
long before AMD and Intel even admitted thinking about extending
the x86 architecture to 64 bits?
