HELP: recovering lost disk files

HELP: recovering lost disk files

Post by Glen A Warholi » Sat, 12 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hello,

I am sure this question has been asked before, but my mind is old,
feeble and barely working.

I have a Solaris 2.5.1 system (Sun Ultra 2) with a bunch of 8GB disk
drives.  Each disk drive is split into 2 partitions.  In a directory in
one partition on one drive, I mistakenly deleted an entire directory and

its component files and subdirectories.  I know you are thinking just
restore it from backups, but that is
not an option as there are none!  Since these files have been deleted,
no other files or directories have been written to this disk.

So is it possible to recover any or all of the lost data?  If so does
anyone have some freeware that would allow me to do do?  Are there any
commercial software packages that I could purchase that would allow me
to recover some or all of the data?

Now you can call me names.

Please respond to me and I can summarize for the groups.  Also sorry for

the crossposts, I hope that doesn't cause too much of a problem or
anything near the size of the one I am trying to solve.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

http://www.cbltech.com/emergency-dn.html is something you may wish to
investigate.

Also a regular backup schedule, but you know that ... now. Painful
lessons are lasting ones.

1. System disk crash - how to recover other disk's files?

Please help a sysadmin who doesn't speak AIX too well...

An RS/6000 in another deaprtment here had one of their disks bite the
dust.  They got another one and swapped it out.  Since it was the
system disk, they're reinstalling the system, and all's well and good.
Except...

The RS/6000's other hard disk, the one that didn't crash, has lots of
critical files on it that they need to restore (such as patients' PET
scans).  There is no tape backup (don't blame me, it's not my machine
-- I gave them the standard lecture).  Anyway, how can they get those
files back safely?  Since AIX hands out chunks of disk upon request,
and the allocation table was probably lost when the system disk died,
I don't know how to proceed.  They're thinking of sending the disk off
somewhere to retrieve the files, but that costs $$$.  Any suggestions?
