Ethernet card promiscuous mode

Ethernet card promiscuous mode

Post by Uli Blat » Mon, 08 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,

I need an ethernet or token ring card for my solarisx86 pc which
is capable of the promiscuous mode (this mode allows to retrieve
all ethernet packets on the LAN even if these packets are not
addressed to the pc itself). Is there somewhere already a list
of such interface cards? If not, please email me directly if you
know such interface cards, and I will build a list and repost it
here for everyone.

I would have thought all ethernet cards could do this?

Certainly the SMC ones do.

Check out the CERT posting on packet sniffing.  That might help!

If SunSoft discover's an x86 network adapter that doesn't support
promiscuous mode then there's a "Known Problems and Limitations" note
added to that board's section in the Solaris x86 Dev Config Guide.
Currently, if I recall correctly, the only board with such a note is
the Compaq Netflex-2 (I know that by saying that someone is going to go
off and check every single page of documentation and find one that I've
forgotten). The Netflex-2 note says:

Promiscuous mode is not supported by the current release of the
        firmware for this card.

That note implies that the firmware might be updated but as far as I
know Compaq doesn't have any plans to revise the Netflex-2 firmware.

1. ethernet card in promiscuous mode with aDSL routers

Hi,
I'm trying to use one of my linux computer to sniff the traffic (for
security reasons) on my LAN using tcpdump and setting my NIC in
promiscuous mode. But I don't see anything from the other computers on
my LAN. I tried it with a linksys BEFSR41 and a speedstream 6520
aDSL/modem wireless router (I'm not using the wireless option). Are
networks build using these router swiched networks? Is this the reason
why I can't see anything from other NICs? The strange thing is that I
was very sure it was working with the 6520 last weak, unless I was
completly lost, I saw some connections from another computer to the
internet (HTTP). But now I don't see anything and I don't think I
change any configurations.

There's no way I could configure the routers to act like hubs? I
would really like to monitor my network from only on computer. I'm I
loosing my time trying to figure out how to do this with these 2
routers?

Thanks
