Solaris 7 Netscape 4.5 DNS Problem

Solaris 7 Netscape 4.5 DNS Problem

Post by Walter Stein » Wed, 06 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Can anyone confirm, explain or solve the following problem?

After upgrading several different sparc machines (SS10 - U5, 32bit)
from Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 7 Netscape 4.5 (sunos551) stops using
answers to its resolver queries.  It hangs "forever".  The Navigator
shows only pages which servers are listed in /etc/inet/hosts.

nsswitch.conf:          hosts: files dns

snoop shows that the resolver successfully queries the name server
for the internet addresses Netscape is trying to connect to.  the
resolver/Netscape keeps trying anyways.

All other services like nslookup or 2.6 executables telnet, lynx,
ftp, ssh, host seems unaffected.

The just installed communicator-4.08 works too.

Solaris 7 Netscape 4.5 DNS Problem

Confirmed. E3000 under Solaris 2.6 with Netscape 4.07. With or without
nscd running. There is libresolv patch which I applied, but it didn't
help. However, due to a network layout, I have to use proxy for most
of connections, so it doesn't happen very often.

Quote:> nsswitch.conf:             hosts: files dns

So I added
                                hosts: files dns [NOTFOUND=return]

I don't claim it actually changes anything, but nothing else comes to
my mind. With that setting, Nutscape returns error (host does not have DNS
entry or something to that effect), but it connects after I hit reload.

I didn't try that, since no-proxy connections are rare.

Yup.

Solaris 7 Netscape 4.5 DNS Problem

We had a similar-sounding problem.

Netscape 4.5 worked fine on a "fresh cdrom install", but failed on all
of our nice, consistently-configured autoinstalled machines.

After much fuss, I eventually tracked the problem down to a bad entry
we'd been adding to /etc/nscd.conf.  Removing this entry allowed
netscape 4.5 to resolve hostnames again.

We don't use nscd at all.  It's enabled now and 4.5 works again!

Thank you very much, ws

1. Problem running Netscape 4.5 on x86 Solaris 7

Hello,

I downloaded Netscape 4.5 from Sun's site for Intel Solaris 7.  I installed
it while logged in as root (did not su to root).  I added the netscape
directory to my PATH, and even rebooted, but when I try to launch Netscape,
I get the following error:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

I am logged in as root when I try to execute it from a terminal window.  It
should be noted, that I am logged into the console directly--no remote
login, and when I press the Web Browser from the CDE panel, nothing happens.

Anyone know what the problem is?
