Solaris Jumpstart with JET and DHCP

Post by Danie Tho » Fri, 19 May 2006 07:00:54

Hi guys

I am trying to configure a Solaris 10 x86 Jumpstart/JET/DHCP server for
our network.  Our network supports both x86 and SPARC based systems,
and I want both environments to use the same DHCP server for Jumpstart.

I have been able to get the x86 clients to PXE-boot and to install
Solaris, but I'm not having the same luck with the SPARC systems...
Here is a brief overview of my config:

My Jumpstart Server is a V20z running Solaris 10 1/06 with the latest
patches.  I installed JET 4.2, and I'm using the built-in DHCP server
for Solaris 10.  My x86 clients are Sun Java Workstations W1100 and
W2100.  My SPARC systems are Ultra 5,10, Sun Blade 2000, and then I
have a range of different servers.

I have a Ultra 10 test machine that I'm trying to configure. when I use
the Jet make_client script, the client passes, and it seems like
everything is created as it should be.  When I use the pntadm and
dhtadm commands, this is my config:(specific to the test machine)
#dhtadm -P
Name                    Type            Value
==================================================
glock34                 Macro
:SrootPTH="/dhcp/OS_sol10_sparc_0106/Solaris_10/Tools/Boot":SinstPTH="/dhcp/OS_sol10_sparc_0106":SrootIP4=172.20.60.20:SrootNM="172.20.60.20":SinstIP4=172.20.60.20:SinstNM="172.20.60.20":SjumpsCF="172.20.60.20:/opt/SUNWjet":SsysidCF="172.20.60.20:/opt/SUNWjet/Clients/glock34":BootFile="01080020C0CA54"

01080020C0CA54  03      172.20.10.11    172.20.60.20    Forever
                glock34

Can anyone please help me with this?

Thanks

Solaris Jumpstart with JET and DHCP

Post by Danie Tho » Fri, 19 May 2006 16:00:18

Hi Jorgen

I checked the OBP version...  I'm on OBP 3.31.  The errors I'm getting
is that the U10 client can not find the TFTPBoot server. when I do a
snoop, I can see that the client doesn't find an IP address at first,
(the server sends a DHCP OFFER for the client's IP, but the client
doesn't respond). When the client retries DHCP, the server sends the
same DHCP OFFER and a DHCP ACK.  The client then reports the following
error:

TFTP server's IP address not known!
Boot load failed.

The client then stops at the ok prompt.

Any ideas?

Looks fine, when you ran make_client where there any warnings ? (may be
worth you posting the output )

Is local_mac_address set as expected (false for system MAC address)

Is the DHCP_VENDOR entry in /opt/SUNWjet/etc/jumpstart.conf correct ?
(ie
has the piece of kit you are using set in it)

did you run
boot net:dhcp - install

on the client ?

You will find more help and info at http://jet.maui.co.uk

Solaris Jumpstart with JET and DHCP

Post by Danie Tho » Thu, 25 May 2006 00:34:21

Hi Bruce

Thanks for the response.  I was able to get the system to work by
changing the client allocation value in JET to bootp.  The clients are
now working fine, and the IP addresses are being reserved in the DHCP
server as I wanted it.

Thanks for the help

1. SST (JASS) 4.2 and JET 3.7.3 on Solaris 10 Jumpstart

I posted this up to the JASS forum on supportforums.sun.com a couple
weeks ago, but haven't yet received a response:

The SST 4.2 documentation makes reference to a JET module that will run
SST drivers during a JET-controlled JumpStart.

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/html/819-1402-1...

"To obtain the JumpStart Enterprise Toolkit (JET), which facilitates
JumpStart-based installations and includes modules to support hardening
with the Solaris Security Toolkit, go to the Sun Software Download site
at:"

However, this module does not seem to come with the most recent version
of JET (3.7.3), and I'm unable to find it anywhere.  Does anyone know
if this is something that's still internal?

Thanks,
