Solaris 2.3 --> 2.4 upgrade Seg Faults!

Solaris 2.3 --> 2.4 upgrade Seg Faults!

Post by k.. » Wed, 05 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I tried upgrading my Sparc IPX box from 2.3 to 2.4.  I give the
install program some basic configuration params, then tell it I
want to use the 'upgrade' method.  Very shortly afterwards, it
reports a "segmentation fault, core dump" in the console window
and that's it.  The console window is still functional enough
to shut the system down, etc.

SWEET!

Any ideas?

Solaris 2.3 --> 2.4 upgrade Seg Faults!

I can attest to the fact that the Solaris 2.3 to 2.4 upgrade did
segmentation fault on us when we tried to do the "custom" upgrade to
select custom packages.  The next time around, we just did the standard,
default upgrade and let the system figure out what was on the system and
what to upgrade.  That appeared to have done the trick since it looked in
the package database and removed obsolete packages and installed the
updated versions, plus new ones.  It was polite enough to figure out the
space requirements *before* commencing the upgrade, thankfully.

Next time around I will probably do the upgrade.  It remembers all of the
old settings (except for a few things like /etc/profile, which it moves
over to /etc/profile:2.3) even though it can take up to 50% longer.

I continue to be *astonished* at the number of reports of problems
people are experiencing when they upgrade Solaris 2.x systems.
I have upgraded several dozen VMS systems over the years and
only once had any problem.  [DEC admitted it was their fault and
talked me through it over the phone.]

Seems like the very least the upgrade script could do when it experiences
a problem is to print out reasonable diagnostics.  May SUN should hire
some out-of-work DEC release engineers.  ;)

1. Solaris 2.3 --> 2.4 upgrade Seg Faults

I used upgrade every two weeks during 2.4 Alpha and Beta test and never had
a reliability problem with it.  Used it during 2.3 without problems.  Have
used it twice now in 2.5 Alpha and that worked, too.  Sure, I've found some
bugs.  That's what Alpha and Beta testing are for.  But I never ran into
data corruption or anything else that would lead me not to trust upgrade.

I don't have a particularly simple configuration, either: I have two
upgradeable disks, two (different) frame buffers, and a custom set of
packages.  Not only that, I generally take advantage of the fact that the
system is alive and on the network during Solaris upgrades, and do some
random stuff (like playing games :-) while the upgrade is taking place.

Nothing is perfect.  If you can provide more information on your exact
configuration and a stack trace from the core dump, perhaps we can help
you figure out what's going wrong.  I've found the install team to be
very interested in finding and fixing bugs.
