I hope this is flexible enough for programs not associated with a
terminal to be able to do a proper login or password change. Will it be
able to support things like popper?

I should think so: it calls back to the user program with a list
of commands: (e.g., first print text, then ask password while echoing).
The asking of the password is controlled by the application.

1. getting around passwd construction constraints

Hi,
Could somebody enlighten as to how a user could change his/her
password without adhering to the passwd construction constraints
such as at least one numeric character etc?  We are implementing
NIS+ and nispasswd does not  allow anybody except root
to change passwords at will. Unfortunately most users here are
not happy at the prospect of sticking to a particular format
of passwds.

thanks and bye
