Low-cost removable SCSI and cdrom writers for Sun

Post by Jim Moor » Sat, 19 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I need recommendations for 2 things, a Zip / Jaz like drive for Sun
boxes (I know that Zip100 has a format.dat entry, and I know Jaz 1GB
does too.  I have heard that the Jaz is less robust.  And I am afraid
that my Zip100 is going to give out some day.  Any recommendations?

Also, how about a cd-r burner that can attach to a Sun, and supports the
sun cd format (both Rock Ridge and High Sierra rattle around in my head
- so letting me know what is currently in use and supported would help
too.)

ThanksInAdvance

I use cdrecord and a Yamaha CD-RW (Model 6416 I think) you can use any SCSI
CD-ROM as long as it can be set to 512 byte sectors - the Yamaha I use has a
jumper to select sector size. Sun uses a proprietary format for their OS and
application disks, based on the ones I've seen.

Modern CD-ROM and CD-RW drives recognise a SCSI command
that sets the block size. Openboot issues it transparently,
so you don't even have to set the jumper.
