Crontab: automatic reboot + login ?

Crontab: automatic reboot + login ?

Post by Karssen, Thirz » Fri, 30 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

This is possibly a dumb question, but I've only
been working with UNIX for several weeks now,
so the answer isn't that abvious to me.

I have to make the system (Solaris 2.5.1 on a Sparc20)
reboot every night (0:00), trouble is that the machine
doesn't automatically login. (e.g. fills in the loginname
and the password).
Is there any way I can make it do so ?
Maybe by a loginscript or something ?

Thanks in advance !
Greetings,
Thirza

Don't know about the login, but why reboot in the first place?  SS20
with Solaris 2.5.1 and all recommended patches does not need to be
rebooted.

You don't need a login to reboot. "man boot" should start you off on
a fascinating trip. I would imagine that a simple crontab entry for
root would give you a reboot if you really need it:

        0 0 * * * init 6

But why do you or think you need a reboot once a day? When unix systems
have been known to run fro flaming years without one?

I can't see why this should be necessary...

What process on the machine is supposed to be logging in,
and what service/machine is it logging in *to* !?

This is all very vague and unclear I'm afraid.  If you want
help, it's best to describe what the underlying problem is
clearly.

Asking vague questions about what you *think* the problem is
and what you think a solution might be, is not going to get
you much help.

May be I am missing something, but you
don't need to have cron log you in.  First
log in as root and add the script or command
to cron that you you want to run like init 6 or
something to reboot the machine at the required time

        Add this to root's crontab

0 0 * * *  /usr/sbin/init 6

That is about all there is to it.

1. automatic-user-login after power-on/reboot.

hi,

problem:
after a reboot/power-off of a AIX4 machine a user should automatically
be logged in.

i tried this by editing the inittab but failed in several tests, the
login-screen appeared.

the AIX survival guide mentions a file /etc/autolog, but neither it
works nor i found infos in the AIX-manuals.

how can i manage this automatical login.

thanks in advance
