cant load specfs program terminated

Post by Shivakanth Mundr » Thu, 04 Mar 2004 12:55:52

1) Can some one shed more light on whats the reason for this error and
the system wouldnt boot from either of the boot devices?  I googled for
some  this particular error but not a lot of help.Is this due to patch?
I see that there is a patch 111588-04 in the recommended cluster.

2) Whats the best way to patch a system with a mirrored root volume in
Single user mode? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Shivakanth.

Depends on how paranoid you are. If you want to be really really
safe, you can disconnect 1/2 of your mirrors, boot to single
user mode, and apply the patches. I have applied the Recommended
bundle 100s of times in multi user mode. I usually find quite
times to do this, and have yet to have ANY problems ( 2.5.1
bundles don't count.).

I have a system which is constantly working on something and I
definitely know that it would not be a good idea to install the patch
cluster in multi user mode, will it be ok not to disassociate one of the
mirrors and apply the patches in single user mode. Would it have any
kind of bad effect?

any idea about my 1st question?

1. Help -- Can't load specfs.

OK, so I had a bad day.  I thought I'd try to salvage it by taking a stab
at debugging an intermittant SCSI cabling problem.  Get everything hooked
and boot.  Comes up fine, looks good.  I log in, whoops errors on sd3,
I guess it's still not working, better shut down and get that tape drive
off the chain.  So I do that and power up the machine.  It starts to load
the OS, urp -- can't load specfs -- and I get an OK prompt.

I've got a classic running 2.4, 16m ram and a Seagate 31200.  Anybody
run into this before or have any ideas how to fix it.  I'm not excited
about reloading from scratch and as aluded to above the tape drive ain't
'zactly cooperatin.

Thanks in advance
