It sounds like your rlogin executable is no longer setuid to root.  It needs
to run as root to bind the privileged port for the socket in rcmd().

I had a similer problem with rsh that caused the same error.  Incredible
as it may sound, my problem was caused by using the +USER syntax in the
/etc/passwd file.  For example if /etc/passwd contained:

---------------------------------------------------
root:passwd_here:0:1:Operator:/:/bin/csh
field:passwd_here:0:1:Field Service PRIVILEGED Account:/usr/field:/bin/csh
nobody:*:65534:65534::/:
daemon:*:1:1::/:
sys:*:2:2::/:/bin/csh
bin:*:3:3::/bin:
uucp:*:4:8::/var/spool/uucppublic:
audit:*:9:9::/etc/security/audit:/bin/csh
sync::1:1::/:/bin/sync
sysdiag:*:0:1:Old System Diagnostic:/usr/diag/sysdiag:/usr/diag/sysdiag/sysdiag
sundiag:*:0:1:System Diagnostic:/usr/diag/sundiag:/usr/diag/sundiag/sundiag
+user1
+user2
+user3
  .
  .
+userN
+userN+1
+userN+2

---------------------------------------------------

Once N got to about 10 (I never tried to determine the exact number) then
any users listed afterward with the + notation would get your error.  This
was on a system running 4.1.3.

1. HELP: Problem with rlogin: rcmd: socket: Permission denied

Hi,
I am working with slackware 2.1 and having this problem for all
the users except root.  When the user tried to rlogin to some
machine, this is what the system tells him:
   rcmd: socket: Permission denied.

Everything is working for the root user though.

BTW: When I started xdm as root, regular users are able to login
but 'xterm' doesn't work.  This is what it said when user tried to
'xterm':
   Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
   Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
   xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0.0

Other utilites such as xclock, xcalc are working fine.

Please send your help to my email address:

Thanks in advance.
