Xfree4.0 and Solarisx86 8.0

Post by Fran?ois BERR » Sat, 01 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hello,

I have installed Solaris 8.0 on my Pentium III with a video
card Viper 770 TNT2. To use this card, I must install an X server
such Xfree86. I did it!

But when I try to start the Xserver, I have the error:

Fatal server Error

xf86OpenConsole: Cannot determine current VT

What does it mean?

Please help me !!!!!

no you don't have to use xfree86. See other posts.
You can use the tnt2 driver in the full (non-beta) version of solaris 8

I think you just don't have extra vt* terminals to start X server
(it requries an extra terminal for run).   As far as I remember this
question is pretty clear described in different manuals for
porting XFree to Solaris.

I'd suggest you to downgrade to XFree 3.3.6 which is stable and
working version.  XFree 4.0 is a developer's version and isn't suggested
for end-users.

I''m using the tnt2 driver for my TNT, but I noticed that Xfree is a lot
faster. So it might be a better idea to use XFree86 anyway. I also get
corruption of the mouse pointer in for example the Netscape window, but I
don't know if that's a bug or if it's because I am using the TNT2 driver
with a TNT card.
