MTOOLS & the Floppy Drive

MTOOLS & the Floppy Drive

Post by Mike Jippi » Thu, 08 Apr 1993 20:29:47

Two questions about Solaris 2.x and the floppy drive on SPARCstations:

  (1) Has anyone ported MTOOLS to Solaris 2.1?  I have tried using
      Mtools 2.0.7 with no success...

  (2) Is there a raw device entry in /dev/ for the floppy drive?  I'd
to specify the equivalent of "/dev/rfd0", but there is no "fd"
      under "/dev/rdsk"...

Thanks.

It looks like 2.05 works ok for us.

Tru /dev/rfd*

No real porting required.  I was able to use the SunOS 4.x executables under
Solaris 2.1.  I did recompile it anyway.

Yes.  /dev/diskette, and /dev/rdiskette

Yep, and didn't have a problem (using gcc 2.2.3?).  Your CFLAGS in the
makefile should be:

CFLAGS  = -O -DSPARC

It uses rfd0c, so this is what I have:

DINO(/1): file /dev/rfd0c
/dev/rfd0c:     symbolic link to rdiskette
DINO(/1): file /dev/rdiskette

1. Tar and Mtools do not work on floppy drive B: (Slackware 1.1.1)

I am unable to get tar or mtools to work with my 3.5" B floppy drive in
my newly installed Slackware 1.1.1. I have no problems with my 5" A:
drive, and mtools can access my C and D hard drives as well. Moreover
fdformat works on both drives A and B and I have been using "setup" to
install new packages via the B drive with no problems at all.

However tar and mtools do not work with drive B. When I execute

        tar cvf /dev/fd1 /etc/printcap

the light on drive B does not go on, so it does not appear to be writing
anything. However there is no error message. The command

        tar xvf /dev/fd1

returns with the error message

tar: read error on /dev/fd1 : I/O error

With regards mtools, the command

        mcd B:

returns with the error message

        mcd: Cannot initialize 'B:'

My /etc/mtools is as follows

A /dev/fd0 12 80 2 15
B /dev/fd1 12 80 2 18
C /dev/hda1 16 0 0 0
D /dev/hdb5 16 0 0 0

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what  might be the problem?
Thanks for the help.
