Uses for Ghostscript?

Post by Paul Dowset » Sat, 03 Feb 2001 02:20:28

I understand that ghostscript is useful for converting postscript output to
a format that is understandable by various

printers (ie PCL, ESC etc), but are there any other uses that anyone could
share with me that I haven't thought of?

Many thanks for your help!
Paul

I've primarily used it in conjunction with `gv' or `ghostview' to view
postscript documents under X...

If you are using Xsun it will support Display PostScript. Ghostscript
and GhostView can be used to display more modern PostScript files but
the operating system provides DPS-based applications like pageview or
the dtimage tool.

Best regards,
Igor.

Will DPS someday be "updated" to support these newer versions of
PostScript ?

I though DPS had been EOL'ed already?

I think that Adobe has EOL'd DPS.

You are right, I asked that question when compiling a DVI viewer
to support DPS. DPS was good but now it is EOL. It do not
support features like transparencies.

Best regards,
Igor.

Are there any planns to EOL DPS in the "near" future (Solaris 2.9, 2.10)
?
BTW: Is there a way to get simply code examples how to display PS (not
EPS - PostScript2!!) using the DPS extension ?

No EOL decision has been announced yet - if/when it is EOL'ed, you'll
see it in the release notes.

http://dps.sourceforge.net/ is the best current source of DPS
information that I'm aware of.  There are docs on Adobe's site at
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/technotes/postscript.html
as well.

1. Anyone using Lout + ghostscript successfully?

Hi...

I am trying to set up lout (from sunsite in pub/Linux/apps/editors) to work with
ghostscript. Lout produces postscript output which I want to print out on a HP
Laserjet III printer using ghostscript.

When I print out such a file, I get a very bad quality output: ragged edges, dots
and lines missing etc. I think the problem may be that gs uses a too small font
and then scales it to the right size (not too successfully I might add ;-).

I use the following line to translate the postscript file:

gs -sDEVICE=ljet3 -r300 -sOutputFile=out.hp outfile.ps

The version of gs is the one on Slackware (2.6.1pl4)

If anyone out there has had and solved such a problem, please post!

Thanks in advance

Conrad
