Solaris 2.5 <-> IRIX 5.3 NFS problem

Solaris 2.5 <-> IRIX 5.3 NFS problem

Post by Alexander Kotopouli » Wed, 21 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

We just upgraded a Sparc2 machine from Solaris 2.4 to Solaris 2.5. It
works perfect in our network of Solaris 2.4, HP-UX 9.01, AIX 4.1 and
other machines. Just our IRIX 5.3 SGI Indy machine refuses any NFS mount
to it, so does the Solaris 2.5 machine.
The command
    mount sol25:/export/home /mnt
on the SGI returns
mount: sol25:/export/home server not responding: Timed out
mount: giving up on: /mnt

This directory is properly exported and can be mounted from all other
machines in the network, the SGI has no problems with accessing similar
directories on Solaris 2.4 machines either. An attempt of using an
automounter to mount the directory even freezes the whole SGI machine
for a while. For some strange reason X-Windows connections between these
two machines don't work either. Other Network services as rlogin or ping
don't have delays or problems.
We're using NIS for hostnames, logins and automount maps.
Does anybody have a similar problem or has heard of something like that?

Thank you for any help, alex :-)

Solaris 2.5 <-> IRIX 5.3 NFS problem

Poor Sparc2 has to serve those fast machines?
Well make sure you have the latest recommended patches for the SGI.
Or at least something recent. There are plenty of them.
You most likely need the kernel rollup and the nfs rollup.
Check if you have nfs3 loaded on the SGI,
you might try unloading it just to get back to a version that works.
Your other systems are running nfs v2. but if the SGI has nfs v3.
loaded it will connect with the 2.5 machine. I am just suggesting
that in case you do not have quick access to patches.
With the X problems too, more patches...

The only problem we have seen between Suns and SGI's was with
an IRIX 6.2 machine being the NFS server, we had to add -32bitclients
to the export options.

1. NFS between Irix 5.3 and Solaris 2.5

Standard alert: I'm not a sys admin, so please excuse if the questions
embedded in this post are dumb.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We have two workstations, and SGI Indigo 2 running Irix 5.3 and a
Sun Sparc 20 running Solaris 2.5. The sun has two external 10GB disks,
and the SGI has one.  We recently started cross mounting the external
disks between the two machines.  Within a week, the SGI started crashing
on us (until now we've had no problems with it).
It appears from the savecore files that the SGI had a bad disk -- the
crashes were all panics while trying to write to swap on the external
disk.

The question is, were we just unfortunate and got stuck with a bad disk
(the company we bought it from shipped a replacement immediately), or is
it possible that NFS was not properly set up and contributed to our
problems?  icrash -r reports that the command loaded into the kernel
at the time of the crashes was nfsd in all cases.

Are there any caveats we should be aware of when running NFS between
these two systems?  The new disk for the SGI will be here tomorrow and
I want to make sure that there is nothing in our set up that could be
a problem before we go ahead and start nfs back up.  If there's info
people need to help us answer (config file setups, crash reports etc.)
I can post or send them.

Thanks in advance,
jrh
