I don't think much of the content. But about the title,
it was my understanding that NT runs NT applications,
and Solaris runs Solaris applications.(Or is it the
other way around? I don't remember!)

NT 4.0 vs Solaris 2.5

Well, it very much depends on what you want to do with it...  Server for PC LANs?,
enterprise server?, technical workstation?, desktop productivity?, Web server?,
etc. etc. etc.  Until you say what you want from it, it's like saying "Which car?
supermini or 4x4?" without saying whether you'll be driving around Edinburgh or
the Amazon basin.

However:

Fundamental, point blank difference.  Solaris 2.5 is shipping in volume, is in
wide use, has a fair reputation for robustness, scalability and utility.  NT 4.0
is currently vapourware, and like most MS rellease deadlines, it appears to be
getting later and later.  By the time you can buy NT 4.0, you'll have had several
months use out of Solaris 2.5.

Pete.

Who needs content??  :-)  :-)

NT 6.0 will still be worse than Solaris 2.5.  ;-)    That holds about as much logic
and data as the reverse argument frequently presented in Redmond.

I hope there will be *no* NT 6.0...

1. Printing from Solaris 2.5 -> NT 4.0 (not old ps problem)

All,

I am having a difficult time printing from Solaris 2.5 -> WIndows NT 4.0
workstation.  I've searched teh newgroups and have found the old
problems with poscript printing as text, etc.  This one is different.
Here is what I have done.  Please reply to my email address

1. Started the lpdsrvc service on the NT workstation.
2. defined the remote system as bsd on the Solaris system (lpsystem,
/etc/lp/Systems)

ntserver:x:-:bsd:-:n:10:-:-:

3. defined the NT printer in /etc/printers.conf

ntprinter:\
        :bsdaddr=ntserver,ntprinter,ext:\
        :description=ntprinter:

4. gotten good results from lpstat -t

% lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: ntprinter
system for _default: nthost
system for ntprinter: nthost
_default accepting requests since Jan 20 18:54 1999
ntprinter accepting requests since Jan 20 18:54 1999
printer _default unknown state. enabled since Jan 20 18:54 1999.
available.

                         Windows NT LPD Server
                              Printer ntprinter

Owner       Status         Jobname          Job-Id    Size   Pages
Priority
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

printer ntprinter unknown state. enabled since Jan 20 18:54 1999.
available.

I can also see status of the jobs on the printer that have been
submitted from the NT workstation.

5. However, I can't seem to get a job succesfully submitted.  In the NT
event log, I get errors of the form:

Request from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx could not be satisfied: possibly due to
network problems

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I'll give this a week
before I try samba.

Many thanks,
Tom
