Ufsdump, Write error, SCSI timeout

Post by Eric L. Scho » Fri, 09 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I am having troubles with the SCSI tape device.  When I do ufsdump, I
CONSISTANTLY get write errors (see at job output below).  However, the
output of /var/adm/messages show that SCSI bus timeouts are occuring.
How can I change the SCSI bus timeout?  Will this solve the write errors?

Thanks

Ufsdump, Write error, SCSI timeout

I was seeing a similar problem with our Sun tape drive. I don't recall
what /var/adm/messages showed, but the dump output was the same. The
lights on the drive would indicate a "high soft error" (whatever that is).
Once an error occurred both the drive and tape were unusable. Running the
cleaning cassette would seem to "reset" the drive, but if the tape was to
be reused it had to be explicitely erased. This could happen as much as
every other dump.

The drive was brand new and Sun kept shipping us new parts. (Not counting
the case, there are only three.) By the time they were done, the drive
mech. had been replaced twice and everything else once. They never did
have an explaination for what was wrong.

The problem has not gone away completely, but keeping the heads super
clean seems to help. I run an 8 tape dump cycle, and I now run the
cleaning tape just before the start of each new cycle. That amounts to
probably 5 hrs total use between cleanings -- *much* less than the
recommended 20-25hrs.

I wish I knew what the problem was, but Sun tech support had absolutely
*no* suggestions on how I could track down the problem, including how to
find out what sort of "high soft error" it was.

...<snip>...

You either have a hardware or cabling fault. The hardware failure could
be caused by the SCSI controller or most likely the tape drive. Debugging
the cabling and termination is not much of trick. I would recommend a
call to your hardware maintenance provider.

Ufsdump, Write error, SCSI timeout

I'd make sure that you keep the block size 'sensible'. I have seen
problems when writing records over 64K (128 blocks). This may be
because I have misssed a patch of course, BUT try fixing the
block size to <= 128 and see what happens. Hope it works for you.

How did you configure the SCSI Tape ? Is it one of the 'supported by Sun'
Models ? If not, you may need to configure it in /kernel/drv/st.conf.
Do a man st for more information on how to do this. Especially, use the
flag mentioned there for long timeouts. And, if on 2.3, _ignore_ the phrase
telling you that giving a block size of 0 would be valid for variable BS
tapes - it will not work. Use 512 or 1024 (is there an upper limit ? I once
used 32768 and could write perfectly, but the machine instantly paniced on
any try of reading...).

1. Ufsdump, Write error, SCSI timeout: SOLVED

I previously reported a problem where I was obtaining write errors while
running ufsdump.  The /var/adm/message file showed SCSI timeouts were
occurring.

Experimentation showed that
  1.  The errors occurred on 8mm also with tar and also while reading.
  2.  I did not see the timeout errors with a 4mm drive.

I installed patch 102002-03.  This solved the problem.  No tape drive
timeouts.
