FTP server accessible via a Web browser? (help)

Post by pierr » Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,

I am following some instructions for making a my Solaris 2.6 system an
anoymous ftp server with WU-FTPD.  I finally got past the static linked
file probles of LS and now want to make the server accessible and browsable
by say Netscape browser.

I can't seem to copy the files /dev/tcp to my ~ftp/home/dev.  It appears to
be a link to a pseudo driver.  I am stumped.  When I try to copy, the
prompt just hangs until I quit.

Any help or pointers greatl appreciated!

TIA,

two solutions:

- read the manpage on in.ftpd in Solaris 2.6; it talks about how
to do it (you have to use mknod to create the device entrie),
and even has a script to do all that for you.

- save yourself from the hassle and take a look at e.g. proftpd
  (http://www.proftpd.org/). It doesn't need a chroot-jail like
  wu-ftpd or solaris in.ftpd.

Please see the ftpd(1m) manual page on Solaris; it has instructions
on how to "copy" the device node.

Thanks to everyone that helped.  I read the IN.FTPD manpage in it's entirety
this time.  Everything I need to know.  Was up and running in 5 minutes.

Thanks again!

1. Help On FTP VIA HTTP -- Browser does not list ftp directory?

Hi

Thanks for helping, First fo all.

My problem is not the ftp server. It works fine under the command
line.

However, when I try to access the ftp directory via a browser, nothing
from the ftp directory was listed from on the browser. All I see is
"Current Directory is /".

I read that when a requested directory does not have a index.html, the
httpd will list all the content of the directory. But nothing
happens....

I tried editing the httpd.conf and added a <Directory> section for
/home/ftp but it does not fix the problem. So I tried adding .htaccess
file under /home/ftp but it also does not work. I concluded that it is
not the problem of httpd. So where is the problem?

  Thanks again for the help.
