Need info on PC/NFS and Unix NFS servers, server/client ratio

Post by Mark Racibors » Thu, 26 Jan 1995 22:37:32

Anyone using a Unix box to provide NFS service to a large number of DOS machines?
We have about 80 DOS PCs with Wollongong Pathway NFS software on them. We would
like to use a SPARCserver5 or 20 Unix box for the server. We are not sure of the
Server/Client ratio. The Dos machines will be doing light office work like
WordPerfect. The Unix box will not be loaded down.

                                    thanks,

We are looking to do the very same thing.  I have experimented with
NFS serving to a few PC's and have been fairly sucessful with it.
The biggest issues seem to be file locking methods used by the DOS
applications.  Many DOS apps use NOS-specific locking methods and
NFS usually isnt one of them.

I have been able to mount a CD-ROM on the UNIX system and share it
with the DOS machines, but any MultiMedia activity tends to crash
the PC.  I dont know exactly what it is trying to do, but it acts
like its working and then windows usually crashes.  Of course, the
UNIX system keeps tugging along!  Ahh, the glories of multitasking
and memory protection!!!

Good luck.  If you find anything out, send it my way.

1. OS/2 NFS client and Linux NFS Server help needed

I'm having problems mounting a LINUX NFS disk from OS/2. The mount
command completes, but when I try and access the NFS attached disk, I get
some sort of access errro. On the LINUX side... i've got my etc/exports
file set up like
/       remote-user(rw,insecure)
but it still gives me problems. I'm running Linix with the V1.2.8 kernel
and OS/2 with WARP, TCP/IP V3.0(beta) and TCP/IP V2.0 NFS. Any help
would be appreciated.
