xmit hung ?

Hi,
Lots of menion's of xmit on sunsolve and google, but i still can't find
the answer to this one.
A server became unreachable on Friday, and spontaneously 'fixed itself"
on Monday, for no rason that we can see. All messages* files are filled
with..

Apr 16 09:42:36 speedy unix: NOTICE: hih1: xmit hung^M
Apr 16 09:48:36 speedy last message repeated 12 times

We can't find xmit anywhere with a ps -ef, nor does fuser tell us who is
running this process.
Can someone advise?

I seem to remember that hih1 is a network interface, and "xmit" possibly
means "transmit".

Does "ifconfig -a" show the former to be correct?

That'll be a high speed serial interface complaining for some reason. Do
you have an X25 connection on hih0 with an unterminated cable sticking
out of the other port of the high speed serial card, perhaps?

xmit isn't a process, it's simply an abbreviation of "transmit".
Something tried to send something down the wire from a high speed serial
port and failed.

1. ? attempt to xmit but no xmit i/o buffer

I'm getting a message in /var/adm/messages:
"attempt to xmit but no xmit i/o buffers"
Environment:
        server: sparc 10 96mb, solaris 2.3 - standard patches,
                sun's fddi, nfs
client: sun ipx, ethernet, nfs mounted fs from the server,
running an intense read test (100MB/10Krecs).
I'm testing concurrent reads from 12 ipx clients attached to the
fddi ring via 12 ethernets. the clients start reading and the
messages come out in the servers message file... and all slows
to a crawl.

Any ideas on what parameter(s) to change to allow more xmit buffers?
