Is 'ls' broken with anonymous ftp in 2.5.1?

Post by Neil Ricke » Thu, 16 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I'm running solaris 2.5.1.

When I 'ftp' to the system with anonymous ftp, and use 'ls', it
prints uid and gid numbers, rather than user and group names.

This did not happen with solaris 2.3.

I have updated my installation (copying the new 'ls' to ~ftp/usr/bin,
the 2.5.1 libraries to ~ftp/usr/lib and recreating the devices in
~ftp/dev for which the major/minor numbers have changed.

Is anonymous ftp broken, or did I miss something?

Thanks for the suggestion, although that was not it.  Big thanks to

solving the problem with his suggestion:

        Try putting libmp.so.2 in ~ftp/usr/lib.

I'm not quite sure anymore, but wasn't there a change from 2.3 to 2.5 when it
came to nsswitch libraries?   Make sure you copy the "nss_*.so*" objects from
/usr/lib as well as /etc/nsswitch.conf.

If I remember correctly you need to have passwd and group files in
~ftp/etc to resolve uid and gid. Did you do "man ftpd"? I think it
mentions something about it in the man pages.

Just a wild guess here,
you put ls in ftp's /usr/bin and did the mknod on the two dev files, did
you make a link to ~ftp/usr/bin?

good luck

Since my original posting, and with some help from a Sun respondent,
we have determined that copying 'libmp.so*' to ~ftp/usr/lib is what
is needed.

1. Is 'ls' broken with anonymous ftp in 2.5.

You missed something.  Anonymous ftp protects your system by executing
the chroot command to isolate ftp users from such directories as /etc.
If you want user and group ID's to be translated, you must include an
etc directory in your ftp root that contains the files passwd and group.
