SAFE? DiskSuite 4.0 -> 4.1

Post by Bob » Sun, 04 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I probably need to upgrade from Solstice DiskSuite (also known as SDS)
version 4.0 to version 4.1 for year-2000 compliance.

Naturally, folks want my test system on Monday, so a quick response would
be highly appreciated.

I'm hoping that someone with experience can tell if the following
procedure is correct, *especially* when the system drive (root, swap,
/usr) filesystems are mirrored using DiskSuite - do I have to unmirror
root, swap /usr before upgrading or what.

"
INFODOC ID: 14681

SYNOPSIS: Solstice DiskSuite upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1
DETAIL DESCRIPTION:

Solstice DiskSuite upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1

To upgrade, perform these steps:

1.  Remove the SDS Patch
2.  pkgrm SUNWmdg
3.  pkgrm SUNWmd

Be careful when removing the 4.0 SUNWmd package.
Please respond "n" to the following questions:

## Removing pathnames in class <preserve>
The following files will be left installed:

        /kernel/drv/md.conf
        /etc/opt/SUNWmd/mddb.cf
        /etc/opt/SUNWmd/md.tab
        /etc/opt/SUNWmd/md.ctlrmap
        /etc/opt/SUNWmd/md.cf

Do you wish to remove them now [y,n,?] n
The following lines will be left in /etc/system:

* Begin MDD database info (do not edit)
set md:mddb_bootlist1="ssd:0:16 ssd:8:16 ssd:16:16 ssd:24:16 sd:8:16"
* End MDD database info (do not edit)

Do you wish to remove them now [y,n,?] n

4.  pkgadd SDS 4.1 packages
    SUNWmd (Required-the base DiskSuite product)
SUNWmdg (Optional but Recommended - DiskSuite tool GUI)
SUNWmdn (Optional - DiskSuite SNMP log daemon)

NOTE: If AdminSuite 2.2 or a later version is already installed on your
system, do not install any of the AdminSuite packages included in
DiskSuite.

5.  Reboot the system

Note: pkgadd installs the DiskSuite files in the /usr/opt/SUNWmd directory
as well as in other system directories.

Note: After installing the software, make sure your environment variables
PATH and MANPATH are set correctly:

Modify the PATH variable to include /usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin.
Modify the MANPATH to include /usr/opt/SUNWmd/man.

Well, 4.0 is supposedly Y2K-AOK again, but I already went to 4.1 and I
wouldn't be comfortable staying at 4.0 after it was once declared Y2K-
non-compliant.  Der Tag is just too important to be messing around with
uncertainties like this.

I just finished upgrading about 15 systems, all of which had /, swap,
/usr, etc. mirrored.  That didn't require any special attention -- the
procedure was just exactly as simple as the Sun InfoDoc said.  Back
out of relevant patches, pkgrm 4.0, pkgadd 4.1 and then (don't forget
this part) patch 4.1.

4.1 has a much improved GUI, if that's important to you.  It's not
something I use a lot, but I find the 4.1 GUI actually usable, unlike
the 4.0 offering.  Note also that if you ever go to Solaris 2.6, you
*must* upgrade to 4.1.

SAFE? DiskSuite 4.0 -> 4.1

J.D.:

Thanx so much for the response.  If I had to guess, I'd guess that 4.0
was always compliant (when patched); since the latest date of 102580 is
Jul22/1997, I think what hppened is they evaluated 4.1 first and put in
on the list, then, for whatever reason, went back and did 4.0 later.

Since I've already certified critical apps on a system w/ 4.0, I'll
probably stick to that.

I agree the 4.0 GUI is awkward.  I use it where it will save me a lot of
typing, sometimes.

1. 4.1 SCSI boot fails, 4.0->4.1 upgrade boot OK

Hi:

I installed 4.1 from scratch on a Digital Celebris P133 box [Phoenix 4.14
BIOS] with an Adaptec AIC 7850 SCSI controller and a 2GB Seagate Barracuda
SCSI disk. The install goes fine [I have to boot from floppy as this system
doesn't support bootable CDROM].

After install, I cannot boot from the disk [which shows up as C: i.e.
disk1].

If I install 4.0 from scratch and then *upgrade* to 4.1 it boots OK. I have
duplicated this on a 2nd machine [same kind of box, but 3 SCSI disks].

I understand that the 4.1 i386 bootstrap code is 2x bigger. Is there some
magic that needs to happen for an older BIOS to work with the new boot
system? I tried 'boot0cfg -o packet' but got no improvement. The system
fails to boot whether I use the boot manager or the basic FreeBSD-only
loader.

Thanks - Jeff Stelzner
