dump of vxfs filesystems

Hello all,

Its been a while since I've worked with Solaris.  We have just recently
acquired a Solaris 2.6 server, installed with Veritas Volume Manager.
We have created filesystems  through Veritas that I would like to get a
dump of, like ufsdump.  I recall that ufsdump cannot dump vxfs
filesystems, hence the name ufsdump.  Is there another utility (other
than tar or cpio) which will give me a full filesystem dump for vxfs
filesystems on Solaris (not something I have to buy, we've already
purchased our backup solution, this is an interim until we get the other
software in and installed)?

TIA

Jamie

yep, try vxdump / vxrestore.

(_Please_ turn off that encryption stuff, or make it more palatable by
hiding it in headers and reducing the size of the signature.)

Unfortunately, they have different feature sets.  The option in
particular I miss from vxdump is -a, which would double the speed of
our backup procedures (we now do vxdump, rewind, vxrestore to get a
list of the files dumped to tape).

1. Dumping VXFS filesystems to L9 tape library

We have several large VXFS filesystems that we're trying to dump to an L9
(with DLT8000 drive). The backup spans 2 tapes. However, vxdump seems to
only wait for 2 mins for the 2nd tape to load before attempting to access
the drive - since the drive isn't ready, the backup fails. (We had a similar
problem when the filesystems were ufs, but the solaris 8 version of ufsdump
now allows you to specify a timeout for tape libraries - this feature isn't
available for vxdump as yet). Here's the backup command

/usr/sbin/vxdump 0ufl /dev/rmt/0un /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0s0

Has anyone had a similar problem, or does anyone have any possible
workarounds?

Cheers

Paul.
