Bus Error on installing Oracle

Post by Cathy Hu » Sat, 12 Mar 2005 09:03:18

I got the following errors, but the same program ran fine on an other
machine

Could someone tell me if that's hard / software error?  Or OS patch
need to be installed?

thanks!

Raw guessing - do you have the Recommded/Security patch cluster for
Solaris 9 installed (the message sounds somehow like a problem with
iconv()&co) ...

Try setting LC_CTYPE=C and LANG=C and export before running the installer

Did you set NLS_LANG in user oracle's environment?

From my Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 /export/home/oracle/.bashrc

umask 022
export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.7
export ORACLE_DOC=$ORACLE_HOME/doc
export ORACLE_SID=demo
export ORA_NLS33=$ORACLE_HOME/ocommon/nls/admin/data
export NLS_LANG=american_america.US7ASCII

export PATH=$PATH:/$ORACLE_HOME/bin:/etc
unset TWO_TASK

I have set the NLS_LANG=american_america.US7ASCII for oracle user
already.  However, I am getting the same result.

Thank!

Did you also set the rest of the environment?

Have you modified /etc/system according to Oracle's instructions, then
rebooted?

yes, I did.  /etc/system looks like the following, thanks:

set noexec_user_stack = 1
set noexec_user_stack_log  = 1
* Require NFS clients to use privileged ports
set nfssrv:nfs_portmon = 1

set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=510
set semsys:seminfo_semopm=100

Take a look at this document and see if you have a similar setup.

http://www.dbspecialists.com/presentations/oracle920solaris.html

Your /etc/system values should work but for installation and initial setup
you might consider using their values.

Did you set user oracle's environment correctly?

Can you post a stack trace from the crash, e.g. run % pstack
name-of-corefile-of-crashed-app # and post the output here, please ?

OK... this looks exactly what I suspected - the traditonal iconv() amok
run... ;-(

1. Can you please post the output of % ls -l /usr/lib/iconv/ | fgrep
"646" | fgrep -i utf # ?
On my Solaris 8 machine it looks like this:
-- snip --
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root bin  6716 Dec  3  1999 646%UTF-16.so
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root bin  6736 Dec  3  1999 646%UTF-16BE.so

-r-xr-xr-x   1 root bin  4748 Dec  3  1999 UTF-8%646.so
-- snip --

2. Does the installer work when you start it like this:
% export LC_ALL=C LANG=C
% run_the_installer
?

3. Which desktop do you use when you run the installer - CDE, KDE, Gnome
? Which default locale is being used for login (e.g. go into dtterm
after login and type % echo $LANG $LC_ALL # please) ?

Bye,
Roland

GRRRR!!  stupid editor.

when you type limit, does it look like this?

201 > limit
cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        unlimited
stacksize       40000 kbytes
coredumpsize    unlimited
vmemoryuse      unlimited
descriptors     5000

stacksize may not have to be quite that large, but i had to raise
mine above the default to get the installation to work.  i forget
what goes wrong.  it does go wrong during installation.

and yes, that is 5000 file descriptors.  sigh.

1. Solaris 2.4, Oracle 7.2.2.3, inodes, bus errors, and I/O errors

Using Solaris 2.4 on a 20 with Oracle.  Oracle has been running on this
machine for over a year.  Typically it has been pretty reliable - Until the
new year.

Lately we are receiving messages that file systems are full when they are not.
We receive messages that the /opt filesystem is out of inodes when df -e
indicates that there are over 400,000 free.
And any executable we run from /opt returns a bus error.
If we change directories into /opt we randomly receive "No device or Bad
Address" messages when navigating into subdirectories.

When these messages begin, Oracle returns "EOF on communication channel"
errors when trying to connect remote through SQLNet V2.  Oracle/Solaris
returns "Bus error" messages when trying to connect from the server itself.

After a reboot the messages go away then return 2 to 8 hours later.  It seems
to be Oracle usage related but no pattern has been established.

Any thoughts ?
Is it Oracle ? Solaris ? Hardware ?

Thanks
  Wayne
