Problem with AIC-7890 SCSI controller

Post by Jason K. Fritche » Tue, 11 May 1999 04:00:00

I have been trying to install Intel Solaris 7 on a new system I have. I
have downloaded patch 107573-06, and have followed the instructions in
the readme file. When it gets to the loading drivers screen, it loads
com.bef, ata.bef, and then dies when it tries to load cadp.bef. These
are the error messages I get:

"Loading driver cadp.bef..."
/dev/diskette0: disk read error, sector 1188
short read. 0x200 chars read
disk read error
/dev/diskette0: disk read error, sector 72
short read. 0x200 chars read
disk read error

If I hit <Enter> afterwards, I get to the boot screen, and the only
option there is to Net boot.

The hardware in the system is as follows.

Asus P2B-LS MB
 - Adaptec AIC-7890 U2W SCSI Controller (built-in)
 - Intel EtherExpress 10/100Mb Ethernet NIC (built-in)
PII 400 CPU
Asus AGP 3400TNT Video Card
Quantum Viking II 9.1GB HD
Quantum Viking II 4.5GB HD
Plextor UltraPlex 40X CDROM

Everything has the latest BIOS available. If there is anything else
that would be useful, please let me know. I would like to get Solaris
running on this machine.

Thanx.

check sun's hardware compatibility list.  that controller
wasn't supported last time i checked.  that's why i had
to use linux in solaris' place.  it might be now....

Try re-dd'ng the disk images. Some users of Dell systems with with 7890
report having to disable serial and ps/2 ports in the bios. Try searching
Dejanews, your posting host.

I have a Asus P2B-DS with the AIC-7890 built in and it works with 3/99
MU.  Since I already had Solaris 7 installed on a hard-disk on another
SCSI controller (AHA 2940), I simply patched my installation and it
worked.

A couple of persons reported problems with the instructions given by the
3/99 MU when they were installing from zero.  Dennis Simpson  posted a
workaround.  Search dejanews for "help on Adaptec AHA2940U2W" in the
alt.solaris.x86 forum to have the original thread.

It is supported as of the 3/99 MU. I got patch 107573-06 which provides
a driver for the DCA. At first I thought it was a bad floppy, but after
trying 3 floppies, and getting the same error message for each one, I
think it is something else.

Any other suggestions or things to try would be much appriciated.

As a follow-up for everyone, it appears that Solaris was being picky
about the floppy drive in the system. I swapped it out, with a
different floppy from another system, and everything worked perfectly.

Thanx to everyone who posted and emailed suggestions!
