Has anyone out there any experience of using a single install server to
install versions 2.6, 7 and 8 of Solaris? If so did you have any
problems that I may encounter in this build situation?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

At present we are getting problems getting the rules.ok to be looked at on
Solaris 8 build.

I have this as a story and I forgot the details, but apparently
a Solaris 2.6 installserver doesn't work to install Solaris 7.
(Details of configuration have changed.)
So don't expect it to work right away.

And so am I.

I'm glad that it isn't just me.

Has anyone managed jumpstart on Solaris 8 working?

I'm using a jumpstart server running on Solaris 2.5.1, and have
successfully installed version 2.6 and 2.7  (and at least one version
for intel platform as well).

Yes, no big changes.  You need to use sysidcfg now, though.

Remember, the Webstart disc should be thrown away.  In the Tools
directory on Disc 2 of 2, there is a add_to_install_server or
something like that.  (You really need to copy the discs to harddisk
for unattended installs.)

Hm, I have a Solaris 2.6 install server that I have successfully
used to jumpstart 2.6, 7 and 8 (the SPARC versions for all of them).

I'm using different rules/sysidcfg files for all of them, though.
(It occurred to me only now that it would probably be possible to
use the same for all releases, at least if unknown keywords in sysidcfg
are ignored).

Yes, we have a single boot/install server for Solaris 2.6, 7 and 8,
working on three different subnets. It works really fine on a Solaris
7 system.
We use different rules/sysidcfg files in order to work properly with
different versions (partition sizes) and subnets.

Yup, same here.  Just remember to use the right ./add_install_client
script for each client.

We have one rules file which works fine.  We only use sysidcfg for Sol8
clients (Ipv6 and Kerberos info) and x86 clients (to avoid kdmconfig).

Does the Solaris Web Start 3.0 work for just Solaris 8, or does it work on
7/2.6.....

Nope.  2.6 wants:

    network_interface=DEFAULT {netmask=255.255.255.0}

and 7 wants:

    network_interface=PRIMARY {netmask=255.255.255.0}

and neither accept the other's syntax.

The variable is "security_policy". You can use "kerberos" or "NONE".
You can find more details on the Advanced Installation Guide for
Solaris 8.

1. Jumpstart Question: Solaris 2.6 vs Solaris 2.4

Howdy.

We have been successfully using Jumpstart to standardize the loading and
configuring of our servers and workstations for several years.  Up until
now, the OS has been Solaris 2.4.

We are preparing to migrate to Solaris 2.6.  I've sort of taken it upon
myself to begin looking at what sort of integration problems we can
anticipate having.  My initial problem is that the same Jumpstart
diskette that worked on a Solaris 2.4 Jumpstart install does not appear
to work on a Solaris 2.6 Jumpstart installation.

For our Solaris 2.4 installations, the diskette is DOS formatted, the
rules file is good, rules.ok is good, etc.  No problems.

Basically, what we do is we have a number of already configured system
files, Tcl, Ada runtime libraries and installation scripts for various
software packages and COTS applications that we copy from the diskette
to /usr/local, and then call all our installation routines from there.

The problem is that if I use the original Solaris 2.4 Jumpstart
diskette, the rules file is read fine, the OS is installed as
configured, but when the "postinst" (post installation) script is
executed, files that had been read and copied correctly in Solaris 2.4
are not visible to Solaris 2.6.  The normal "set_root_passwd" script is
not even found by the OS even though it's in the correct directory (the
diskette is still being mounted to /tmp/install_config isn't it?).

Additionally, when I use the Solaris 2.6 File Manager to look at the
files on the Jumpstart diskette, I noticed that all the files are in
UPPER CASE when using the File Manager.

So, I read the AnswerBook for creating a Jumpstart diskette for Solaris
2.6, and the AnswerBook states to create a UFS diskette (Solaris 2.4
said the same thing as I remember...).  However, when I use a UFS
diskette for a Jumpstart diskette, the OS cannot even find the
"rules.ok" file.

Has anything changed with Jumpstart for Solaris 2.6 that I'm missing?
My hardware platform is a SS20.

Thanks for your time.

Rich Johns
